That would be fine, no need to credit the (anonymous) "Guest" source.

Since they were reduced to the mandatory <300K file size for uploading to this section, I have the higher resolution originals if you don't think the "web resolution" posted ones are sharp enough. Let me know and I'll post them somewhere else at full resolution and give you a link to grab them.

Here's a departure turn. They don't dredge very far into the turning basin (I think they rely on the mud to protect the walkway in the event of a runaway backup). She kicks up quite a bit of mud getting her stern far enough west to be able to swing the bow (with very little room to spare on the far bank).

Thanks for the excellent info. Its' pretty much what I already assumed. The dock is basically seen at quite a distance from any public access & the views are restricted at best. Unless you have a boat or a drone, I'd say its' better to be there when they're on the move. I'd really like to see it when they back down to the turning basin to wind. That looks like a perfect opportunity for some really nice close up action shots.

Being shorter, the barge Metis is not as visible from the upper overlook. The Metis is generally used when the river gets silted to the point the Stephen B Roman starts self dredging/plowing her way up river. The Metis has to make more trips to keep the city supplied, even though the Sephen B only brings ~half loads to Rochester (after offloading at deepwater Oswego NY first, then heading to shallower Rochester at lesser draft before returning to Picton ON to load up again).

Luedtke is currently dredging to allow the Stephen B to get back in, using a glorious old spud barge mounted 1958 Clyde Whirley Crane (originally steam, now diesel):

The Army Corps brought in their trailerable Buffalo District based aluminum survey boat BUXBAUM last week to do updated bottom profiles. Although Luedtke does their own maps, the Corps cross checks against theirs and they agree on a plan. The dredge has a GPS antenna on the tip of the boom, which they position right over where the dredge plan map says they need to remove a chunk (they were using a 15 cubic yard modified clamshell type bucket last week).

Luedtke could be working on the Genesee River for another 4 weeks or so.

Rochester dredging is supposedly NOT included in Trumps budget for next year, so maybe this is the end, unless cement can be brought in over mud flats with a hovercraft, or something.

Here are some views (captions describe location).

The view from the upper "overlook" is getting pretty restricted in the summer when the trees are fully leafed out (the city used to trim it back periodically, but not for a quite a while now) .

They've been changing the signs around the cement terminal for a while, and finally swapped the last ESSROC sign visible from Boxart Street with a Lehigh sign only a few of weeks ago.

Note the view from the lower trail clearly shows one of the welded up side openings from the Stephen Bs package freighter days.

I see that trail on the air view. What sort of view can you get when a boat is tied up there?

The dock can be viewed from an overlook in the parking lot at Turning Point Park at the end of Boxart Street. You can walk the main trail north from the park down to river level and then south along the river to the dock area.

This trail generally follows the old railroad route down to where the Cobourg ferry docked.

In Rochester, looking at the air views on Apple maps, that dock looks pretty isolated. I'm assuming the only good way to get pics of boats there is when they're on the move up or down river? I don't see any public acess around the cement pier & the surrounding area looks like a jungle.

Technically it was a merger, but it takes a little to explain. HeidebergCement was the world's second largest cement producer and did business in North America through their Lehigh Hansen subsidiary. Italcemeti was the world's fourth largest cement producer and did business in North America under their Essroc subsidiary. HeidelbergCement and Italcemeti merged in late 2016 with HeidelbergCement being the name used for the merged corporation. Lehigh Hansen and Essroc apparently still both exist as subsidiary corporations, but all their North American cement business is now being branded under the Lehigh Cement Company LLC name. This includes the plant in Picton as well as the terminals in Oswego, Rochester and Toronto.

This is from LehighValleyLive in February, referring to the former Essroc cement plant in Nazareth, PA:

"While the Nazareth plant was spared and not divested in the sale, Seig said Essroc now operates as the Lehigh Cement Co. and is part of Lehigh Hanson's North Region.

"For now the legal entity is still 'Essroc' and our operating permits still show 'Essroc,' but we have changed the signs to say 'Lehigh Cement Company' since that is the direction we are going with all of the Essroc cement operations," Sieg said."

Has the Essroc plant there changed hands to this other company?
