I'm sure a lot of it is based on what the crew entered into the transponder but I think Marine Traffic tries to translate it sometimes. Like I'm guessing that the Cort enters "Burns" and MT translates that to "Burgas." At a length of only 3 letters, "Zug" and "Soo" might not be long enough for them to attempt a translation and so it gets left alone and then you don't see anything on the mobile app.

How much of that information is based on what is entered into transponder? I have seen some intentionally fun port entries. All ship based information is transmitted from the ship by VHF radio or statilite transponder.

I normally use their app on my iPhone and ever since they updated it a few months ago, if a boat lists its destination as someplace they don't recognize as a port like "Zug" or "Soo" then it just shows as "Port not recognized." Even stranger Meldrum Bay seems to fall into this same category.

They also regularly show the Stewart J. Cort as sailing to Burgas, Bulgaria.

This is off subject but, in doing a little checking up today on AIS I came across the Mississagi downbound on the St. Clair River and from Marine Traffic's website they goofed on her destination and port as it lists an ETA for June 10 at a port somewhere clear over in Malta for Pete's sakes and Yikes! Give me a break like the ship will never ever see that port much less ever make it to that port other than on a towline to be scrap LOL. Again sorry to be such a crtitic of the MT website but, it just really gets me when they can't seem to get a simple port correct. Wonder if she's going to one on the St. Clair River or on Lake Erie someplace? Comments welcome.

I totally agree with you cjkoster on the Lake Huron ports and you can also add this one as well for Marine City, Michigan they list it as "Belle River." While I admit that they are correct in part that the Belle River does flow through Marine City, I am certain that there are other ports and rivers around the world with the Belle River in its name. Don't know why they just can't say it as Marine City and be done with it plain and simple? Don't mean to be a critic of them all of the time but, for Pete's sake just make it plain and simple for us landlubbers and boatnerds to read and understand that's all! Also, thanks Roger for the AIS issue on the American Spirit and hope that they get it corrected soon.

Thanks Roger, that would explain it.

Denny, I've noticed that Marine Traffic doesn't seem to handle Lake Huron ports well. Stoneport and Saginaw are always showing up in weird ways, and there's no coverage in Georgian Bay or the North Channel.

Soo Traffic is reporting that the Amercian Spirit's AIS is not working.

This is off subject but, as of 9:30 p.m. on June 8 on the Soo Locks internet cameras the American Spirit was about to depart from the Poe Lock headed downbound. On the Marine Traffic website though I guess their destination is Indiana Harbor from Two Harbors but, they do not list an exact ETA for Indiana Harbor yet! Also if you look, they Marine Traffic still lists them as departed from IH port on June 3 and their AIS map location is also not updated as well on that one. Maybe the folks their are taking a long break someplace?

Yup noticed the same thing with them as well. I'd speculate that they meaning Marine Traffic just isn't updating some of their stuff? I sure wish they'd make the ports simple and easy. You should see how they do it for Stoneport ETAs give me a break! More than 3/4 of the ships on the Great Lakes "Will Never see the ports in the world that they list at times on their website." Sorry to go off subject but just stating the point and facts with them. Also wish they'd keep information on their website longer than they do. Guess they just want everybody to pay up for their service on their website. I will keep with the free!

On a somewhat related topic, does anybody know what is up with the American Spirit on Marine Traffic? She hasn't been updated for a few days now. At first I thought she might have headed into Sturgeon Bay but then I saw she arrived in Two Harbors.

Thanks tugboat hunter as I appreciate that very much and it was just exactly what I was looking for. As for cjkoster, Yes you are correct as far as Marine Traffic showing a Canadian registry for the past few days on her. I was just surprised not to see any dates listed on her regarding the change in registry on Marine Traffic! Sometimes they will put it there and often times they don't sort of a hit or a miss type of a thing. Again thanks all for the replies. The Desgagnes fleet sure is expanding at a rapid pace here lately and it is not easy keeping up with all of the changes and additions to their fleet. Thanks again!

Not 100% sure but I think Marine Traffic has been showing her as Canadian for at least a few days now.

Anyone know exactly when the Taiga Desgagnes was reflagged from Antigua and Barbuda registry to Canadian? I tried to look it up on the Marine Traffic website but, there are no dates listed as to when the transfer was done. I suspect it had to be recently since it was on the News Page most likely sometime this month. If anyone has further information that they can add and provide to me I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help.
