That would explain some of the moves but just about the same percentage were moved from aft of to forward of the stack.

Acids from the combustion caused deterioration on the aft spars and rigging.

I've noticed while going through many of the old photo's in my collection that at some point the after masts were moved from either in front of the stack to behind or vice versa. I didn't seem to be part of an after cabin modification or upgrade.
A case in point is the Elbert H Gary with USS had the mast in front of the stack and as the R E Webster with Kinsman it was behind.
My best guess in some instances it had to do with the change from coal to oil
burning but I'm interested in hearing some input. TIA
