Topic review - USCGC Mesquite
Author Message
Post subject:  Re: USCGC Mesquite  Reply with quote
Among the many upgrades performed during her 1970s Major Renovation, USCGC MESQUITE's original two Cooper-Bessemer GND-8 main diesel engines were removed, totally rebuilt and then reinstalled. MESQUITE was scheduled to have two new GM EMD 645-E6 V-8s installed during the summer of 1990 at the same time USCGC MARIPOSA was being similarly repowered at Sturgeon Bay. Obviously, the new engines were never installed in MESQUITE as it was the summer of 90 that she was salvaged from the rock ledge she had occupied for six months and lowered to her final resting place. So, her original Coopers are still in place on the ship.

I believe the Mesquite was the third of the five 180s brought to Curtis Bay in 1975-76 to receive an EMD 8-645-E7, among many other upgrades.

Was she repowered from C-B engines to EMD's like the other 180's?
