Are you referring to a sprinkler system on the decks of the bulk carriers?, this is more of a cooling system, the heat generated by the cargo in the holds of the ships will force the vessel to hog, hogging means the deck will arch, forcing the stem and the stern to dip lower, a good 6 inches at times,in the water, causing a draught problem, the cooling prevents this from happening, just to satisfy yourself, run some hot water from the tap onto a piece of large enough plastic, watch what happens, by running cold water onto the plastic will reverse the process.

Why do some ships have sprinkler systems on them? What are they carrying? Thanks for the info.
