The generalities and platitudes about pipeline safety are reassuring but in this case we are talking about an aging pipeline in a critical waterway owned by a company that has a history of only telling the truth about the pipeline after they've been caught in a lie and correcting maintenance problems only after having them pointed out by someone else. Those of you who have transportation industry experience should know the dangers of complacency.

After many years working for a railway and trucking companies I can say:

Pipeline is the safest mode for this type of product.

Before Line 5 we moved oil by tankers. It's easier to shut down a well monitored leaky 20" pipeline than patch a ship that ripped it's bottom out.

The question isn't which method is the safest, but rather how safe is a 60-year old pipeline, especially one in a location where it could leak and pollute the waters of Lakes Huron and Michigan and their tributaries -- which supply drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people in the region.

Pipeline is the safest way to transport hydrocarbon long distances. The alternative is more trucks on the road or increased rail transport. Both of those alternatives have received criticism in the news recently... none of those 3 options is not an option, unless you wish to give up driving your car or return to burning wood to heat your home that is...

Enbridge is telling Minnesota that it must have permission to replace a pipeline there because it's 50 years old. Enbridge is telling Michigan that the 60-plus-year-old pipeline under the Straits can last indefinitely. Makes me wonder who's being told a lie.

Pipelines' weakest times are when they just start and then their later years. And some in between. If they're concerned now about eight foot waves, then they got some misgivings about its integrity. The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) the one that had the 5000 protesters in the middle of the Dakotas for a good part of 2016, is up and leaking. 200,000 gallons leaked into a South Dakota farmer's cornfield last month.

From today's News Channel report: "Enbridge says that Line Five's dual 20-inch pipelines remain in excellent condition and have never experienced a leak in their 60 years of operation."
To which I say, I've never had a heart attack in my 70+ years of life, but the fact remains that is a distinct possibility with every passing day. I find their logic totally illogical!
