I wheeled on the Eugene J. Buffington and she always took about 3 degrees of left wheel to hold her. There had always been complaints about her steering after she went aground on Bolder Reef. They surveyed her and found that one side was @ one foot longer then the other.

Interesting Lookback from Monday's news. Interesting to me because it was an old Liberty ship built for the World War II effort, and because when I worked on the SS Paul L. Tietjen 10 years after the collision, the wheelsmen would always complain that the boat had never been repaired correctly and it required more effort to hold a course.
