It doesn't take a lot to confuse me, but if the new manager of the CBT wants to eliminate pellets to be unload in Cleveland, why are they still receiving pellets? I know there's been a fairly steady stream of boats in there this year. If boats are unloading there, then why are cargoes going to Ashtabula, then transshipped to Cleveland? By the way, the Mesabi Miner is downbound Lake Superior from Silver Bay for Ashtabula.

ArcelorMittal's Cleveland mill gets its pellets from Silver Bay, so if the pellets are meant for Cleveland then this makes sense.

20 miles off. Not bad. Thanks for the correction.

Denny,

I'd have to check but that sounds right.

Nope they did not load those pellets in Two Harbors but rather in Silver Bay. This run was also done I believe by the Indiana Harbor on their first trip of the season as well if my memory is correct?

I see the Walter J. McCarthy Jr. is unloading in Ashtabula this a.m. I didn't follow her on AIS from Lake Superior, but I think she loaded
pellets in Two Harbors.

What does Logistec have planned for it if no pellet transfer?
doesnt say much from their purchasing announcement. however I bet they're going to be bringing in more foreign products in the face of the steel mill right up the road, since they're running in conjunction with the Port of Cleveland whos been bringing tons of foreign steel in.

We were told CBT is under new operators who don't want to use it for pellet transfers. Pellets to Ashtabula, then transshipped to Cleveland will be common now.

After not seeing pellet cargoes into Ashtabula until late last season I see the Indiana Harbor is due Ashtabula after loading pellets in Silver Bay. I'll be interested to see how many loads go into Ashtabula this season. I'll assume the pellets will go to Cleveland like they did last fall.

Ah, ok. The Corrigan-Mac works had slipped my memory; didn't realize it was that long ago already. Time seems to fly since the 80s meltdown.

You sure about that?
I guess long gone is a relative term, but Google Earth images show the former Jones and Laughlin blast furnace(s?) (on the west side of the river near the head of navigation) were removed 12 years ago (in 2004), and that the former Corrigan-McKinney blast furnaces (also on the west side of the river, about a half a mile downsteam) were removed sometime between 1994 and October 2000.

So that leaves just the two former Republic Steel blast furnaces on the east (south) side of the river at the head of navigation. That and Charter Steel's electric arc furnace in Cuyahoga Heights.

You sure about that? Arcelor-Mittal owns both the blast furnaces on either side of the Cuyahoga, one of which is operating, but not sure of the usage right now of the other. Both are former Int'l Steel Group, formerly LTV, formerly J&L and Republic plants.
Interesting to see Wilbur Ross in the news as possible Commerce Secretary. He was the ISG guy who bought LTV and saved the place. Again.
The only mills that qualify as long-gone would be USS Central Furnace, closed around 83 and taken down in 84, and anything earlier. Will never forget the boat ride down the Cuyahoga summer 83 and seeing that mill totally deserted. It was a sign of things to come.
Otis on the lakefront is way long gone. I'd be glad to hear of others that were around.

All those old blast furnaces in Cleveland are long gone.

And in Lorain, Republic's blast furnaces were shut down in December 2008, and will likely never operate again. After 5 years of rolling steel only in Lorain, Republic built a new $85 million electric arc furnace that came online in 2013, but it was idled in 2015 after the drop in oil prices reduced the demand for pipe. Republic's rolling mill was also idled this spring.

I thought Mittal had two Mills up there, both the former Republic / LTV blast furnaces and then right before them was another Mill that hadn't been used in quite a long time. Also, since there is no longer the pellet terminal in Lorain, are they operating that blast furnace up the river about a mile or so there?

Which mils are you referring to ? There's only one integrated mill up the Cuyahoga.

They've been running shuttles out of Cleveland Bulk Terminal (CBT) as well so the ship loader appears to still be in working order. There have been some days in the past few weeks that shuttle runs from both CBT and Ashtabula offload at ArcelorMittal in the same day.

Wondering if the Ashtabula pile is a hedge against a bad winter (like is predicted). Have enough ore to make it past a possible spring delay in shipping. Or maybe Ashtabula offers cheaper rates for storage? They've been building the pile in Cleveland as well, like happens every winter, so the Ashtabula pile is definitely a mystery.
