You'll soon see plenty of bow shots of her once she makes her way thru the Seaway Denny. If and when she travels to the upper lakes I will be sure to make it my goal to get some good 'bow - on' photos to share on the Boatnerd site. By then though I'm afraid they'll be old hat.

Thanks Wawatam for that link and a great photo as well by the person that took the phograph. Hope to see a bow photo of her from someone soon as every photo I've seen so far of her as been a stern photo which I guess is better than nothing. She is due also at the Panama Canal in Balboa around May 18th barring that there are no delays with weather or traffic. I wonder also where she will end up being reflagged at once she arrives in Canada? Bet she gets reflagged probably in Montreal before she comes inland on her 1st visit. If they bring her into the Seaway still under foreign registry, I am almost certain it would be a first since she is registered from Tuvalu and I don't believe I've ever seen a vessel from that flag enter the Seaway system beforehand? Can't wait to see her soon!

Another photo of the Algoma Strongfield popped up on MarineTraffic.com a couple of days ago.

Its also obvious that shipyard bankruptcy in China had potential to sink them-no pun intended. Management from an outsiders perspective has been poor IMHO.
Shipyards don't die off that quickly-someone on Church St didn't do their homework.
Algoma protected themselves from the shipyard bankruptcy by requiring the shipyard to post a performance bond. The Bond issuer paid Algoma all the money the had paid for the nearly complete ship and Algoma was able to buy the ship at a fire sale price. What more could Algoma have done?

The answer is probably about money / bottom line.

I would think it is much less expensive to have a foreign crew deliver the ship than a Canadian crew.

Why foreign flag for the delivery, Canadian seafarers can't be to happy about that, I hope it has more to do with not being able to find enough Canadian crew rather than Algoma being cheap!

My guess is Equasis is in error.
Wouldn't be the first time!

As of March 10, 2017, Industry Canada, Spectrum Direct, the issuing organization of radio call signs in Canada shows the call sign for that vessel as CFJ8305, They still show the vessel named CWB Strongfield but with a new updated MMSI number and the owner now as Algoma Central. My guess is Equasis is in error.

Re: Equinox class

The Call Sign is CFJ8305.
Equasis gives it as CFG8305. It was renamed Algoma Strongfield 8 March 2017.

The two 740s from China are Self Unloader aft. The three 740s from Croatia are Self Unloader forward. The two 650s from Croatia are Self Unloader forward.

The Algoma Niagara is Self Unloader aft (one of the China built 740s)
The Algoma Innovator is Self Unloader forward (the first of the two 650s from Croatia).

Re: Equinox class

I understand the new 740 footers are self unloaders with a deckhouse mounted unloader and the two 640 footers from Croatia will have forward mounted unloaders.
Those two should look like Lower Lakes vessel Manitoulin!

Re: Equinox class

by tugboathunter » March 10, 2017, 10:24 am

I only mentioned the possibility of it becoming a self-unloader because Algoma already has seven bulk carriers in their fleet and I doubt they have need for another unless they suddenly retired the Tim S. Dool. I know the Dool is 50, but I don't see that happening any time soon. Plus, they didn't seem very urgent to recover the Strongfield earlier, as it seemed like they had all but abandoned it, which doesn't indicate a present need for a straight decker since they didn't order any from China or Croatia.

Would this though be a loss at least for the Canadian Wheat Board now known as G3 or Global Grain something? I ask this because in the beginning weren't they supposed to be receiving "two bulkers from China and now they end up with only the G3 Marquis formerly the CWB Marquis?" I would think that even though G3 still has the G3 Marquis that they own yet Algoma manages and also operates, they can't be too happy only having one vessel to own when I thought they were supposed to own and have two? Maybe I am missing a few things here as I almost always do! Sorry to sound so negative on this subject just me hopefully trying to make a point in a nice way and not to sound like I am a villain here or a bad guy. On a change of subject though, Algoma also announced that they launched their Algoma Niagara a few short weeks ago in China. She is supposed to be the first of their new 740-foot self unloading vessels built in China. My question and point is, "Is she supposed to be having her self-unloader forward or aft?" I don't recall where it is supposed to be and wasn't Algoma supposed to be building some 740s with a forward mounted boom if my memory is correct? Any information is appreciated. Thank You.

Re: Equinox class

by NiagaraMike » March 10, 2017, 7:05 am

I don't see her being converted to a self unloader.
She is almost a free play! If I recall the initial price for her was around $50 million and they get it for $13 million at auction.
I'm sure she still needs some work and a trip to Canada but what a bargain for ACR !

The Call Sign is CFJ8305.

Re: Equinox class

by William Lafferty » March 9, 2017, 11:58 am

Its call is CFG8305. MMSI 316014060. IMO 9613953.

Re: Equinox class

by Denny » March 9, 2017, 10:03 am

Does anyone know if the Algoma Strongfield has any Call Signs along with the IMO Number? Last night I tried in vain as always and usual to look it up on the Transport Canada website to no avail. Obviously there is something that I am not doing right or else I would've found it on the website like the rest of you all have. I am not 100% certain but, I think that their call sign might be this one as in CFJ8305 and their IMO Number to be 9613953. Also think that I have the MMSI Number as being 316014060? Can anyone confirm any and all of this information for me and if not correct, please provide me with the correct ones? Thanks in advance for any replies and information that any has and can give.
