Round number two. Another weekend storm. This time they are predicting snow turning to rain and back to snow. What a mess for mid-Michigan. Mid January with no snow on the ground and no ice on our lakes. Ice fishermen will have to bring their boats for tip up town.

Thanks for the info. A picture is truly worth a thousand words...and that Cartiercliffe Hall pic just makes me cold... :-)

Here's the deck crew of the Cartiercliffe Hall in Lock 3 of the Welland Canal on December 29, 1985 removing ice from her hatchcovers.

Crews do get out on deck with sledge hammers and hot water hoses. I recall spending a below zero night on Lake Superior hosing and bashing foot-thick ice off hatch covers on an Oglebay Norton footer. Lake Superior, below zero, middle of the night, spray coming over the bow and out there in full rain suit swinging a sledge hammer so hatches can be opened at arrival in port. The job was hard sometimes.

ICE on ships is very hazardous just as it is on land. Ice, no matter its source -wind driven spray from waves or an ice storm. Large enough amount of ice can raise the GMT of a vessel causing it to roll over. A training vessel at the Great Lakes Maritime dock rolled over due to heavy icing one winter from spay. I always enjoyed working on steam vessels on the lakes. Our crews had enough hot water supply to melt ice off the decks. Even with hot water it was very time consuming and dangerous job.
During one storm on Lake Superior we spent a day at anchor in Whitefish Bay deicing the pilothouse and decks around our winches so that we could navigate down the river. All of the pilothouse windows were covered with ice almost a foot thick in places.

Could someone educate me on the impact of ice storms on Lakers operations? I know ice build-up is generally considered a serious issue for ships with added weight etc. However, a quick web-search does not provide any articles or pictures of lake crews taking immediate actions with sledge hammers or whatever to rid ships of ice build-up. Do crews spend time manually de-icing boats?

(obviously asking as someone who does not sail)

The day after the storm in mid Michigan. The Raisin River at Blissfield is going to crest above flood stage by Tuesday afternoon. In mid Michigan the storm did not supply as much moisture as was predicted. Only 2” of rain, not 3”. Very little freezing rain in the Irish Hills. Mostly sleet. As for snow from this storm we received less than .5”. The storm started breaking apart loosing its punch last night. The temperature stayed above freezing until late Saturday evening which help. The ice storm was very minor.

Correction: Alpena , Mi could see 12 to 18 inches of snow. (darn auto correction with spell check). Ground is semi frozen in mid-Michigan resulting in potential flooding due to rapid run off.
