Fast-freezing ice on Lake Huron

by Bookworm » March 12, 2017, 5:49 pm

Like everyone else in the Great Lakes region, this winter has been one surprise after another, but, for the most part, the lake remained free of ice. Today, around 14:00, I took a sight-seeing trip along US #23, south of Harrisville. The water was open and I watched two mergansers diving not far off shore. Coming back at 17:30, there was ice (like broken glass shards) as far as I could see! If the rest of the Great Lakes are like this (and temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing until the weekend) ships traveling to the opening of the Soo Locks may have a really challenging time.
