Denny's 5th Story the Fitz Bell Raising

by Denny » May 30, 2017, 8:56 am

For my 5th story in the series I will call this one as far as the title goes "The Edmund Fitzgerald Bell Raising!" I can proudly look back in time and say that I was definitely there at Whitefish Point and on the grounds of the museum the day that the Edmund Fitzgerald's bell was pulled up from 530 feet below in Lake Superior's cold, dark and icy depths. I get cold chills and a sense of pride knowing that I was there whenever I watch the Fitz DVD videos and I see a footage of one of the wives of a crewmember and she says during the interview "Being out there on that spot gave me a piece of mind because the sky was clear and the water was blue!" I am so glad and thankful that my folks took me up to Whitefish Point that day to and glad and proud to say that I was there when they pulled up the Bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unfortunately I could not stay for the ceremony on July 7 in the Soo as we had to get back home so my Dad could go back to work. I have it on DVD video though as far as the Fitzgerald's Bell ceremony at the Soo and each year I watch it on the anniversary or around that time at least. Hope that you all like this story and appreciate it as much I have in telling it to you. The Edmund Fitzgerald and its legacy and legend has always captivated me and held my interest ever since I first learned about it on my first Soo Trip with my folks when I was just a young lad at 9-10 years old in the early 1980s. I will always and forever remember the Fitz and her brave crew and may they all rest in peace and never be forgotten and may the legend live on!
