Re: RC Boats

Update: After going somewhat nuts searching the net, I visited 2 local hobby shops, neither of which carry kits. Both carry "take out of the box and run" types. Good News - Guy at the second store took the time to go through some of his "buyers" catalogs and came up with http://www.dumasestore.com/ This site has several complete or combo kits that contain not only the boats, but all of the necessary hardware and electronics. I ordered a catalog to be sent to Dad. Hopefully, he can find what he is looking for. But, I am still going to keep looking around, just in case. Side Note: I mentioned BoatNerd.com and he brought it up on the store computer ... I may have just created another 'nerd.

Why not find a good hobby shop and see what they have in "beginners" kits. They will be stocking up for Christmas--an excellent time for looking and buying kits.Don't forget he will need glues, some tools, paints, etc. to build and finish it. Also get him reading some model boat magazines, there are always modelling tips, articles and see what type of model sparks his interest. Keep it simple for the first model, no detailed rigging for the first one.

To tell ya the truth, I don't even think he knows what styles are available. Personally, I think a classic tug would be nice. I'll talk to him this evening or tomorrow and find out.

I cannot, off the top of my head, think of any kits that 'complete'. The closest would be something produced by Robbe or Graupner, which would still require him to find a motor, batteries, and radio. Not difficult to do, even without internet-shopping.

What kind of a model is he looking for? Runabout, tugboat, freighter, etc?

Well, I'm in Las Vegas but Dad is up near Rogers City. He is looking for a kit that he can put together. Somewhere, he saw an ad or something that showed someone using an RC boat for fishing (not even sure that would be legal in MI) and he is looking for something to do besides watch it snow, then shovel it outta the way this winter. The kit would have to be complete - boat, servos, motor(s) radio, etc as he probably be able or willing to drive too far to get what he needs. I also have to note that he has No Computer and won't get one. (he actually bought a 'puter and printer this spring - had them for a month then took them back to the store, Unopened).

You can try finding a local club that would be able to help your Dad get into the hobby. Where are you located? I am president of a club in the Detroit area. Also the website rcgroups .com covers all things r/c. If you go to that site, go to 'topics', choose 'boats' their is different forums for fast, scale, sail, and general discussions regarding r/c boating. The folks on that site are great at helping out answering any questions you may have. I'll check back if you have more questions, be glad to help.
