Re: New look boatnerd

I have tried to log in to the new site. No luck and I'm fairly adept at navigating web sites. I emailed the Boatnerd website about my problem, no response. So I keep using the old site where there are more comments / activity.

Re: Algoma Guardian

A number of years ago I was engineering a salt transload for my employer. I priced out an unloading pit and conveyor to load an 8000 ton dome. We expected to run about35-45,000 tons per winter thru it. We already had 2 loaders assigned to property, could easily have one there when the dome needed to ...

Re: East Jordan Iron Works

You're a bit off on the East Jordan Southern. The last run was in 1961. It was a logging road that ran out of logs in 1930's and was switched to passengers and freight. When the Iron Works switched to trucks, that was the end of the RR. This is from google search.
From here on is from my own history ...

Re: Customer needs and locations driving ship design?

I can tell how the salt business goes. The salt companies rent space on the various docks. The State of MI takes bids on salt for lots of municipalities. The price is FOB the municipality. I work for a road commission large enough to bid about 100,000 tons including some cities in the county. Our ...

Re: Osogovo, Muskegon

My wife's sister ex worked at CWC. They do some exotic metal pours so it might be them. I'm not aware that EJIW does anything but gray iron castings but I could be wrong. I've followed trucks before to see where materials brought in by rail went to. lol

Re: Salt Mines

A followup: I looked at the contract link. It looks like the big 3 allow DS to get the 1-10 loads per agency. I didn't see any thing big although I didn't read every page. The contract that was taken away I referred to was 2000 truck loads

Re: Salt Mines

The salt business isn't cut throat. The big guys collude big time in the bidding. Google Ohio DOT Salt bid rigging etc. They just got caught there.

I've spent 40+ years in the road business and 10 years on the front lines of winter maintenance. Detroit Salt was inactive for years. It reopened and ...

Re: Sandsucker Niagara

I have a small foundry not to from where I live. The sand used to come in by pneumatic semi tanker and the old sand out by dump truck. Now days most of the sand is cleaned and reused. The new sand is delivered in fabric totes and the waste leaves in similar totes.

Re: Looking for 2 Ships (Lake Erie)

If your serious about moving salt from Buffalo to Monroe, truck is about your only option. I doubt if a shipping company will talk for a couple boat loads. Rail can't react quick enough to arrange for cars and an unloading / loading location (You will most likely need to lease your own cars)

It ...

Re: Looking for 2 Ships (Lake Erie)

If you are trying to get into the "salt game" you will soon learn that the big producer get together to decide who will supply who and what the price will be. I say its bid collusion and has gone on for years. Google "Ohio salt bid rigging" if you don't believe me.

Re: Small ports on Lake Superior

Salt goes to the Yalmer Mattila dock in west Hancock. Nothing was at the Dollar Bay dock a few years ago when my daughter was attending (and graduated) from Tech with a BSCE. Tom Hynes is a fellow CE:) I recall the trucks were from Howes & Howes out of Mesick when I was there. I would think I would ...

The dock in Dollar Bay received coal back in 1968-72. The double bottoms hauling the coal to Lanse would roll by my dorm room at MI Tech. Can't tell you about after 1972

Re: Salt-Grand Haven

I went by the docks last Sunday in my boat. There's lots of stone that will need to be sold or moved to make room for salt. Last Friday, I talked to a few VerPlank's drivers that were delivering salt to my work place. They said they didn't think there would be any salt stockpiled in Ferrysburg, it ...
