John G Munson/Duluth today

Anyone know why the Munson went out under the bridge this morning after unloading limestone, promptly headed for Superior, did a loop, then went in the Superior entrance and right back over to the DM&IR docks in Duluth? Definitely the scenic route from Hallett 5 to the Ore Dock. Track of this ev...

I don't know at what point things like that are removed from ships sold for scrap. But I suspect that answer as to where the plaque is might very well be the bottom of the Atlantic near the Azores.

Re: Charles M. Beeghly 1978 Grounding

Before the Duluth piers were rebuilt there were two spots on the north pier inside the harbor what were replaced and both had larges lumps of dirt pushed up into the lawn of the Palucci building. I was told back then at the museum that both were from boats hitting the pier. One was supposed to have ...

Re: Record Long Term Lay Up

John Sherwin - 40 years in lay up this year.

Not necessarily in the same category, but the carferry Spartan has been in layup for 42 years this year.

Not sure if it counts as 'layup", but I think the CTC 1 would probably be the record holder if that does count.

Re: Charles M. Beeghly 1978 Grounding

Yes, I think the Duluth incident was at the other end of 1978, seems to me it was right before Christmas The Beeghly was gounded on the harbor side of the bridge, blocking the channel. Are there any pictures out there of the Duluth incident. It was big in the Twin Cities news at the time, but I have...

Does anyone know what other boats responded to the fire? I seem to recall news footage of the Peter A.B. Widener nearby, but there were a number of other vessels in the shot as well.

The Star Tribune article on Red Burgner can be found at https://www.newspapers.com/clip/26144570/burgner-deposition/ Looks like the article was Nov 10, 1997. Interesting article more in the sense of some of the other names involved at the time promoting what he had to say and who contradicts him. On...

Re: Great Lakes Auto Carriers

Barring lack of knowledge of the City of Bangor in the other thread, I dont think auto carriers had any stability or handling issues. From what I have read, boats converted or participating in the automobile transportation were considerably smaller than other fleet boats of that era. So they were b...

Re: Thunder Bay Ore Dock

There was a ship loading when we were there, the recollection of my then-8 year old brain is that it may have been a US Steel vessel, but I don't know if that is possible. (Was a red hulled boat).[/quote] Probably bad form to quote your own post, but.... This one has been bugging me in the days sinc...

Re: Thunder Bay Ore Dock

THe docks were actually pretty accessible. We were up there on a family vacation in 1976 and we were pretty much able to drive right up to the water's edge, probably in the parking area visible to the right of the dock. It was the closest I've ever been to a working ore dock. There was a ship loadin...

Re: Strangest/Most Interesting Rumors Over the Years

Wish I knew where the picture is, but somewhere in my Dad's slides is a shot of myself and siblings as little kids at the Ariel Bridge with the Paul H. Townsend departing behind us. (Name clearly visible.) Picture was summer vacation 1974. So I can vouch that it did make it to Duluth at least once.

Re: Patrick Hughes seaman Marquette & Bessemer 2

Complete WAG - might want to check the 1900 census records for towns in MI where carferries ran. (E.g., Ludington, Frankfort, etc.) Seems like at least a possibility that he had a career on railroad carferries before going to the Marquette & Bessemer #2 if he spent the last years of his career t...

I did a search and found a link to potential explosions - but that's for iron ore concentrates. Scroll down to Precautions of the webpage. http://www.bulkcarrierguide.com/iron-ore.html And I have never, ever heard of an explosion onboard a ship carrying iron ore on the Great Lakes. And I've been st...

I am wondering if there has ever been a Laker that layed up for the winter at the Superior ore dock or the Duluth CN/DMIR docks? I seem to recall seeing ships at the Duluth docks for the winter. Re: Fraser-Nelson Expansion Plans 1960s

Fraser planned to build a drydock for thousand footers, twice. Once in the 1960s and the other time in the mid-1970s. What brought the plans to a halt is that they needed a partner to help fund the expansion program. With Bay Shipbuilding, American Shipbuilding and Erie Marine all having drydocks a...

Was there a reason that the White was faster than the Patton or Girdler? Same hull, same engine, should have been comparable. But it seems like the White is always mentioned as the fastest.

For now, we can think of the Cartiercliffe Hall, the most recent catastrophic damage of this extent. It was rebuilt and worked many more years. Did the Cartiercliffe Hall fire cause actual damage to the hull? I remember the afterquarters and I think engine room were completely burned out, but I was...

Re: Freighter’s air horn creates ruckus in Superior

Rather than the distance heard or police response - I'm more curious about how this happens on a ship layed up for the winter. Shipkeeper push/pull something they should not have? For that matter - how is the airhorn system even pressurized or able to maintain pressure for any length of time on a sh...
