Re: Video of second vessel capsizing at Cornwall

How sad to listen to the idiots making a big joke about this incident during the video. Perhaps they would not have thought it to be quite so funny if they were on that vessel.

Re: Mackinaw?

Over the past two winters I've read many, many submissions to this Board stating that the current Mackinaw is inadequate and the US Coast Guard needs to acquire a new, larger, more powerful ice breaker. I'm sure most of you will agree that writing repeated anonymous postings to Boatnerd is probably ...

A question for Russ

I have a log book from the B.W. Druckenmiller in 1961. Russ, whenever you have time, could you look in your resources and tell me who the Captain was on that ship in '61?

Thanks!

Re: Duluth/Superior icebreaking

Thank you, Al, for your astute response to this thread. I grow weary of the armchair experts sitting at their home computers proclaiming that someone made "another bad government decision" when said "expert" has only fragmentary knowledge of all of the factors which go into makin...

Re: Remember this date in 1980?

I remember the 1980 Olympic hockey games very well. It seemed like everyone watched it. Minnesotans took particular pride in the fact that several of the US team players were from Minnesota, and I remember my surprise that so many people I knew who were non-hockey fans took an interest. In my opinio...

Re: Jones act

It saddens me that the American and Canadian shipping and shipbuilding industries appear to be unwilling and/or unable to compete on the world market. Canada had an exorbitant 25% tariff on foreign built ships and companies like CSL and Algoma appeared to simply wait until that tariff was lifted and...

Re: football this weekend

It is appalling to me that the Board of Regents at a public university would actually think it is OK to pay a football coach such as Mr. Harbaugh 5 million a year. In Minnesota we have people who advocate giving Jerry Kill a raise because they fear he will leave for greener pastures since he "o...

Re: New Books and Videos for Christmas

I have purchased all of Mr. Gillham's books directly from him from the listings on the Great Lakes Bookshelf page on the Boatnerd home page. His prices include shipping and I prefer to support authors directly since they do not make much money publishing specialty books on Great Lakes shipping.

Captain Altschwager info wanted

I have a 1968 timetable for the C&O/B&O cross Lake Michigan autoferry service using the car ferries Spartan, Badger, and City of Midland. Someone wrote "Spartan - Capt. Altschwager" on the timetable. Russ, do you have any information on this officer? I really appreciate your willin...

Re: Ohio State vs MSU

Denny, for some reason they changed the division names from Legends and Leaders to East and West. I agree that Maryland and Rutgers don't add much to the conference at least as far as football goes. Ohio Bob, OSU played an impressive game against a tough MSU team, but now, of course, they will be cr...

Laker article in a non-Laker magazine

The Autumn 2014 issue of First & Fastest published by the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society has an outstanding article entitled The Chicago Jinx Ship by Lou Gerard. In 1966-1967 the Alex D. Chisholm was converted to a self-unloading bulk cement carrier and renamed Medusa Challenger. Medus...

Darryl, I do not see a way to provide a link. Go to the Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping (http://www.boatnerd.com) home page. Click on Photo Galleries. Click on The Historical Perspective Gallery. Scroll down to January 2009 and click on the Chief Wawatam photo. There is one hand firing photo on Pa...

For those who may not have seen it, photos of the Chief Wawatam were posted to the Historical Perspectives Gallery in January, 2009. There are some wonderful photos showing Firemen stoking the boilers.

Re: Kahlenberg Engine Ratings

The tug Mount McKay is for sale (you can read about it in a previous thread) and it has a Kahlenberg engine. Looking at the many great photos on this sales listing, I notice that the engine room telegraph has the standard Slow, half, and full settings and also has O'load which I assume means Overloa...

Re: Captain Metz and the Incan Superior

From 1988 to 1992 I made several trips to Duluth where I would make sure to see the Incan Superior loading and unloading 50 foot boxcars in Superior and passing under the Aerial Lift Bridge, and then I would drive up to Taconite Harbor to see the unique Erie Mining trains and ship loading operation....

Re: Canallers in WWII

The crew of "Portadoc" were not picked up by a U-boat. The following is from uboat.net: At 17.39 hours on 7 Apr, 1941, the unescorted Portadoc (Master John Evan Jones) was hit by one torpedo in the stern from U-124 about 150 miles southwest of Freetown. The ship settled by the stern but di...
