Re: Lake Erie Anchorages
Marine Traffic DOES show those anchorages, you just have to turn on the port info toggle & zoom your screen in until you see the little anchor icon & click on it. The one you're asking about is called the "Kingsville Anchorage".

Re: Roger M. Kyes
I've noticed here in Buffalo that the Manitoulin & NACC Argonaut both have hinged masts that lower down for passage under the bridges. They clear by a couple feet in the down position & if they had been up they'd be cleaned right off. The max allowable air draft under the bridges here (at LW...

Regarding how long she's actually been in use, the longer you go in time, the harder & more expensive it is to return her to service. Even if she had been put away & hermetically sealed the day after she was built, she's still OLD. Her internal mechanical, air, electrical, & steam system...

Re: New Edmund Fitzgerald Depiction Touching Six Fathom Shoa
I have never heard anything about that winch. I have heard stories of other ships where the deck winches & lines were used to help bind the deck back together after cracking had occurred as an emergency measure to try & stop her from breaking apart but I have no idea. Maybe things were way w...

Re: New Edmund Fitzgerald Depiction Touching Six Fathom Shoa
One other factor that I think had a major roll in this was the re-certification of her load lines allowing for deeper loading. During the accident investigations there was anecdotal evidence from former crew members stating that the ship was just not the same after that change. They stated that she ...

Re: New Edmund Fitzgerald Depiction Touching Six Fathom Shoa
Her stern broke away because the hull was damaged from the shoal & when those rogue waves drove her bow down, her bow slammed into the bottom while the engine was still pushing ahead. The weakened center section broke apart from the impact of the bow hitting bottom, the ore shifting ahead & ...

Re: New Edmund Fitzgerald Depiction Touching Six Fathom Shoa
In his taped interview, Capt. Cooper says something to the effect of "He was closer than I'd wanted to have been" with regards to the shoal. Sometimes someone like him has to be careful not to "call out" another Captain out of professional courtesy especially since there was a si...

Re: Seasonal Cargo Movements
Many cargos have had major declines while there have been a few new businesses that have created cargo that's never been moved before. Others just changed modes. Steel mills took a big hit in the 70s-80s time frame & the movement of their raw materials drastically dropped off around the lakes. C...

Typically, steam engines that are smoking badly are either being fired wrong, or the fire room gang is "blowing down the flues" to clean her out.

Re: M/V St. Clair
It seems like a proper fire watch would seriously reduce these types of incidents. If someone was purposely roaming the ship while work is on going, watching the sparks of a welder or a torch being used, keeping an eye on flammable materials nearby, & checking everything after the work is done, ...

Re: Roger Blough and Stewart J. Cort Question
Lackawanna's ore dock had a hopper/conveyor system for self-unloaders & it was right on the wall so the short shuttle boom boats could unload into it. It moved on tracks & could be adjusted to fit the ship's arrangements.

The Victory-Maumee laid up here in Buffalo on Jan. 11th. I was down there a couple days ago & saw a few guys still on board. They were up on top of the upper house of the tug & fixing something on the mainmast. Another couple times I was aboard a few different boats here, the engine room cre...

Re: St. Lawrence Seaway Opening 1959
Mainly dredging. Seaway draft is 27' & most ports were dredged in the upper teens & low twenties at the time. Buffalo wasn't even ready by the opening. The heavy cruiser USS Macon had to anchor out in the lake & have visitors brought out to the ship by small boats & tugs when she tou...

Re: Duluth to Toledo Grain Shipments
I'm not sure what the combined length of Victory-Maumee is, so I'm not sure how much of a length record they will be until I find out BUT- They will be the 1st ever tug-barge combo to unload at the Frontier Elevator, they'l be the 1st winter storage/lay up boats for Buffalo since the Frantz way back...
