Hello,
I want to see if the unused MF/HF radio that is on the tug I am on works. Does anyone know of any marine broadcasts that you can pick up from the lakes?

Re: Saltie info
Thank you for all the info very useful.
If anyone know of a source for all ships entering leaving the system that would be really useful.
Also any historic data, most of the ports seem to only have current vessels and the internet archive only has a few days captured.

Saltie info
Does anyone know if there is a source for info on the the origin of inbound cargoes and the destination of outbound cargoes of salties?
I can find the info for a few individual ports but as far as I can find nothing on the seaways site.

Re: Electronic Communication on the Lakes
All the ships I have worked on have wifi onboard that works most of the time. I believe the last one was a hybrid system that would connect to to cell towers when they were in rang and satellite when it could not.

Yeah there is nothing really I can think of that would not be easily accessible on the vessels I have been on.

Not that I disagree, but on what do you base the claim that steamers are more reliable?

.....Sailboats use motors to get in and out of harbor so where is the logic? I suspect they were mostly thinking of small dingys (which generally would not have an auxiliary engine) and just have not clarified. Regardless auxiliary sailboats are far more self sufficient then powerboats, For instanc...

Its true US Icebreaker Alder was supposed to be in TBay last week cancelled cause of the virus...... Does anyone actually have a source for the virus being the reason the Alder got pulled from the Thunder Bay breakout? I am not claiming that it was not, just wondering what the source is. Did the US...

Re: Two Articles, Two Very Different Opinions
By the way, the average cruise passenger on these vessels is very wealthy. While a higher end cruise is more economical valuable then the mass market ones they are still a fairly pow value type of tourist. They stay for a short time, do not pay for accommodation, and while many eat ashore not all w...

Re: Two Articles, Two Very Different Opinions
Sure not hard to understand. Muskegon is in need of economic stimulus and wisely wants the cruise ship business. Traverse is a wealthy community that is somewhat snobbish and they think ship tourists will somehow degrade or ruin their community. Tale of two cities. One smart , one not,lol I do not ...

Re: GFL needs AB's
I took a quick look in a couple nautical dictionaries I have lying around. Both wording showed up, I think the "able seamen" is older with "Able Bodied" being used as well for other but over lapping meaning. I think think the two have merged and are synonyms, and have been throug...

I cannot remember the exact numbers but as an OS with Algoma 4 years ago The base hourly rate was in the low 20s (CAD), but you would get more then that on weekends and would get quite a lot of overtime (changes with vessel and trade).

I do not know about others quoting numbers but I am on the Canadian side. If ASC is normal then pay is much worse on the American side.
