US Export Pellets diverted away from Great Lakes?
Canadian National Rwy. has moved the first of several test trains of Minntac pellets to Convent Marine Terminal (CMT) in Louisiana, just south of Baton Rouge. Train weighed 21,500 loaded or about 18,000 short tons of pellets. I presume that one shipload of pellets will comprise the test. These might...

Re: Escanaba Ore Dock
Reserve estimates are based on projected ore prices, higher prices will create more reserves as more money can be spent to extract the ore.

Re: Ashtabula Pig Iron Plant
The pig iron plant will be owned by a South African company. Frankly I'm surprised that anyone would build a pig iron plant in the US, considering the ones that were closed in the late 1970s. Not surprising considering how cheap Natural Gas is in the USA. VoestAlpine has a DRI plant in Texas that u...

Is there any truth to the myth that the reason CN now owns the ore docks in Duluth and Two Harbors was to gain control of a section of railroad tracks connecting their Northern routes to much more appealing Southern access routes? I had heard that story when USSGLF was purchased by CN. If you want ...

Re: Escanaba
CN will not invest in the dock at Escanaba or for new rail cars unless they can be assured of a return on their investment. That rate is higher than it was in the past. And they have investment needs elsewhere on their railroad that are much more likely to generate higher returns. Another factor in ...

Re: Escanaba Ore Dock
Seems unlikely, only one Mine left on the Marquette Range, and Cliffs owns the railroad and dock at Marquette, MI. To route Pellets from Cliff's operation in Minnesota would be roundabout if from the Nashwauk or Unitac plants, and it would involve routing the trains on a route with very heavy CN tra...

I believe the process of iron ore beneficiation was not routinely used until taconite became the principle source of iron ore. On parts of the Mesabi Range, particularly on the west end, the Ore was relatively high in Silica which required benefication in the form of washing to reduce the Silica co...

Re: Multiple limestone stops to load
Limestone (Calcium Carbonate) has different crystalline structures which effect its properties in industrial uses, some forms make better cement, others are used as aggregate, and some as fluxstone in chemical processes such as making steel. In addition there is Dolomite which is also called Dolomit...
