Admiral's Barge in Milwaukee
Does anyone know the status of the 1920's admiral's barge Maid of Honour ? It was purchased in 2002 by the Milwaukee photographer Mark Gubin from Palmer Johnson of Sturgeon Bay and had a long history before that. But the most recent mention I can find of it is a Boatnerd news update from 8/22/2003 w...

Re: Alpena/Thunder Bay Library
Trust me, you're not the only one missing that wonderful database. I had referenced it on a nearly daily basis for my job for nearly three years but just after Christmas it was gone. I only learned of the UofM version recently and I agree that it's not quite as user friendly. If you try to search a ...

Re: Boat vs. Ship
If you want fun with nautical terminology, try cataloging items at a maritime museum! You want to use the right keywords to be able to search for things later, but which to use? Is it a boat or a ship? A freighter or a bulk carrier? A wheelhouse or a pilot house? A Chadburn or an engine order telegr...

Re: John J Boland logbooks 1960s
I'm not sure who manages the Boatnerd fleet pages, but perhaps someone could update Saginaw's page to reflect the repowering? It still lists the power as steam turbine, and I think I may have incorrectly used that as a reference recently when someone asked me if it was still a steamer. (Yes, I shoul...

Re: Capt. Harry Anderson
I was very sorry to hear of Captain Harry Anderson’s passing and I feel honored to have been able to meet him briefly at the memorial service at Mariner's Church a few times. I was so impressed by the respect and deference that everyone there always showed him, and how a small crowd often gathered a...

Modeler Bob Stewart
Does anyone know the whereabouts of Wisconsin modeler Bob Stewart? His models at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum include a diorama of the Rouse Simmons , the Christopher Columbus , and the Chequamegon . My last address for him was at a gallery in Lake Geneva that now appears to be closed, but he was a...

Re: Barge Manitowoc
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum has a couple photos of the Manitowoc as a working ferry, and quite a few detailed photos of its construction in Manitowoc.

Re: Blough downbound
How long does a 5 year inspection usually take? If it arrives as scheduled early Thursday morning, is it likely to still be there on Friday or Saturday? The Blough is my favorite, and I haven't seen it in ages.

Re: Block Stone
What fascinating images. Thank you for sharing them. I'm especially intrigued by the story you've started to piece together. In my limited experience, it seems rare for manifests or log books to have personal touches like the drawing. Just out of curiosity, is the manifest/log in an archive or in a ...

The Detroit Historical Society is still working on those details, as the layer of zebra mussels is obscuring some marks. Joel Stone, their curator, is helping with the identification and you can see his initial examination of the cannon here: http://www.detnews.com/article/20111005/METRO01/110050401...

Re: What is your favorite ship?
I represent at least a few of the 10k views, so I'll add my vote. 1) Roger Blough (her seemingly disproportionate width, especially as viewed bow-on, just makes her look..cute) 2) St. Marys Challenger (still steamin'!) 3) Edward L. Ryerson (beautifully streamlined, the last Manitowoc-built freighter...

Freighter vs. Bulk Carrier
I've heard the terms freighter and bulk carrier used almost synonymously, but I was curious if people preferred one term over the other. Is one more common among the boatnerd community, and one more used by the average layman? Also, if you were searching for a boat like the St. Marys Challenger and ...
