Re: Schooner Tribune sinking

Upper and lower, It's all relative. The article doesn't state the source of the story, so it could have been a U.P. newspaper report - the Sault, Escanaba, or Marquette. To Yoopers, everything below Beaver Island could be "lower Lake Michigan". Just as, to downstate newspapers, anything th...

Re: CCGS Pierre Radisson stern damage

The old Mackinaw was built with a stern notch, allowing them to winch a following vessel right up tight for close escort work. Did they do this often? Did the trailing vessel use her engines to assist or were they just towed through the ice? I wonder why this wasn't used more - too time-consuming to...

Re: Brevort Limestone Shipments

Unfortunately we can't tell whether they are loading sand or limestone remotely, we have to guess by the destination port listed on their AIS. It seems they never keep too large a pile of stone around, though.

I'm not familiar with the Aspen, but I remember the Maple was here at the railroad dock for a time. Now it's up the Kinnickinnick River in Milwaukee.

Alpena's voyage to Muskegon

The News Page stated that Alpena will arrive in Muskegon channel Thursday evening, but due to high winds blowing through the Straits she went north of Mackinac Island and anchored near Rabbit's Back. The Hollyhock has been working the track from Round Island Passage to White Shoal, so I'm not sure i...

I don't recall any footers (it's been a few years), but "A Sailor' Logbook" by Mark Thompson was a good read.

Re: Sunken tug in Marquette?

The Selvick was intentionally sunk east of Grand Island, north of Munising, as part of the Alger Underwater Preserve. It's a nice dive at a relatively shallow depth.

Re: Fraser Shipyards Question

From information I found on page 80 of Patrick Lapinski's book, I think the vessel alongside the Frantz is the hull of the former Robert Ireland, converted to a floating dry dock, I believe this was 1961. At a quick glance, the other barge hull (with the normal pointed bow) could be the Sadie (see p...

Re: US to Canada ferry at Sault Ste. Marie before bridge

I'm not sure about the ferry dock locations, but the tugs were sold for use on Lake Ontario (Wolfe Island), and were towed away. One ferry took on water off Saginaw Bay (north of the Thumb of Michigan) and sank, taking the other ferry down with it via the attached towline. They sit on the bottom the...

Looking at the maps, there might be a spot near 6-Mile Road, or another spot just below the ferry landing, but that appears to be about it.

I don't think there is any organizing body to "cancel it". It's just something that happened, that became an annual thing, and people show up if they want to participate. Here in Saint Ignace, the annual big car show was well in advance of the regular June weekend, but it seemed like we st...

Re: Enbridge Line 5 shut down

The pipeline was recently shut down (both legs) by the courts. although Enbridge just reported that they ran a sensor pig through the west line and it showed no internal damage or changes in thickness. They now have to go back to the court that shut them down, I believe next Tuesday, and ask for per...

Re: US Government Vessel 19 - details wanted ?

I managed to catch it on the Port Huron webcams and confirmed that it was the St. Louis. I had suspected that it was a Littoral ship, but I could find nothing about the departure in the Menominee/Marinette news.

Thanks you to those that provided the answer !

Just thought I might inject this here: I don't recall any mention of horns in any Coast Guard regulation concerning sound signals being used on ships/boats.. Signals are sent by whistle not horns.. Rule 32 of the Navigation Rules states: (a) the word "whistle" means any sound signalling a...

Ship sound devices

The thread about the Gott and it's whistle/horn reminded me to ask this question. I hope that some of our sailors on the board can answer this for me. When I took my class to get a 100-gt captain's license for Inland Waters, I learned that a vessel more than 100 meters in length had to be equipped w...

US Government Vessel 19 - details wanted ?

This vessel passed through the Straits of Mackinac, South Channel during the night doing 27 knots. Currently down-bound in lower Lake Huron off Port Hope at 13.3 knots, should pass Port Huron in a few hours. AIS listed as traveling from Menominee to Marinette, clearly outdated information. Anyone ha...

Re: Watch 400,000-tonne ore carrier sink

Cedarville rolled mostly on her side with the bow going seconds before her stern. That's true, but the bow touched bottom early enough that the stern was raised up out of the water, inverted at first, and the water draining out of the freshwater tanks atop the stern house was raining down on crewme...
