Re: ss keewatain

I visited this fine boat a couple of years ago and the volunteers were doing a magnificent job in restoring her alas still much work was in progress. The engine room was a well-laid-out replica of the engine and I was able to help the lady who was the guide in explaining the operation of it. (I had ...

Re: Labrador Ore

When I was on Saskatchewan Pioneer and it had been reflagged to IOM the first trip back we loaded ore in Point Noir Quebec for Burns Harbour. She was classed them as foreign (alas)
The ore was the same as taconite in pellet form, not raw ore.

Re: Gale warning protocol

There are many factors in when it is prudent to anchor for adverse weather. It may not be possible as once I steamed back and fro in the lee of Michipcoten Island as we were caught unawares. On another boat, it was terrible at anchor in strong winds and rather than re anchoring after she had dragged...

Re: sun doxford diesel engines

Yes, Doxford diesel engines were British engines. and very popular at one time. I sailed on many ships with this type of engine and it came with many configurations. There was one a three-cylinder which was called the economy They were mainly opposed pistons and looked unusual when operating with th...

Re: little current ontario

As a rider to my previous post. We were in the Nederlands when they celebrated "Liberation Day", the day the Canadian forces freed the country from their German occupation. When the locals found out there was a Canadian ship in this small port the invitations to the crew to join them in th...

Was on the Algorail and took the last of the ore from there. It had been lying about for a while. Think the year was 1980.

Re: News Story "Pilots Steer Debate on Lakes"

As a little add-on to my earlier post. In Sept Iles and Point Noir we used to be obliged to have a pilot and tugboat to berth and undock when completed loading. The lakes companies obtained a deal where this was no longer a requirement as they rightly contended their masters were capable of doing th...

Re: News Story "Pilots Steer Debate on Lakes"

Where the issue really shows up on the great lakes St lawrence is when Lakers need pilots down the St Lawrence companies and Masters don't understand why after hundreds of trips down below they still need a pilot,as EU said there a very tight knit powerful group! Where does the Master go once they ...

Transistor Radios ??????
They were not invented then so the answer is obvious.
Going this far back will be a challenge finding crew lists etc.

Re: Suez Canal blocked

The reports I have read indicated they experienced storm winds and reduced visibility due to a sand storm. It is very difficult to say what actually happened until a full report is published. It is my view the vessel suffered a strong leeward drift due to the wind and it was not noticed due to the ...

Re: Little sad about the Arctic going to scrap

Many years ago we were in the same part of the world at the same time. The "Artic" was leaving the locks in Antwerp when we on "Saskatchewan Pioneer" were waiting to enter. Very very unusual for two Canadian boats to be so close. We each blow the he a salute of thee long and two-...

I don't know if this will count but the RMS Segwuin which operates on the Muskoka lake is a coal-fired steamship with triple expansive engines.

Re: Fairbanks Question

This is a question for Laker Capt but anyone can chime in, if I got this rite the original theory with the FMs was you start out using 2 engines then if more power was needed you brought the other 2 online in theory, now did they stay that way or did they eventually just put them all on line and us...

Re: Fairbanks Question

They certainly had a very distinctive sound and when all four were online and at full speed, the noise in the engine room was something to behold. The bridge control was a series of slots to control the engines and it took a good deal of practice to get the proper speed clutching and out the engines...

SAMUEL MATHER (1927 Amship) 3 coal fired B&W sinuous header water tube boilers with Dayton underfed stokers. Had 3 doors per boiler, when we came on watch the middle doors were already pulled and and the rest of our watch we pulled ash from outer doors, then shot all of them over the side via t...

Re: Coal Fired Steamship Question

A couple of points I forgot to mention that do have some relevance. When shovelling in a pitch of coal you never stood directly in front of the furnace opening but to the side. This in case there was a flashback. The other thing was you turned your belt buckle to the side as it would get extremely h...

Re: Great Lakes Pilot and Ocean Vessel Crew Disagreements

There are some ship captains who think they are the supreme deity. It is only when they meet a pilot that they discover otherwise. I concur with part of this as I had the misfortune to sail for over two years with a captain that held this misconception. During the two years, I don't recall him utte...

Re: Great Lakes Pilot and Ocean Vessel Crew Disagreements

After the trip from Thunder Bay down to Montreal, I as a captain had had enough and needed to get rest. I would not wish to get the necessary qualifications to use to pilot from Montreal to Esqumains. It is a well-known fact the Pilotage Authority for this area did not want the Canadian Laker captai...
