Edmund Fitzgerald, broken keel?
I just saw this on the Friends of Know your Ships Facebook page. I'm sorry it this has been covered here but it's the first time I've heard any rumor of this keel problem. Here is what was posted: I used to have a chat forum on my old phone that crashed and i lost it . On this forum there was a disc...

Re: Wolfe Islander III
Along with metal replacement they are putting on a completely new larger wheelhouse. Someone said they were painting the bottom last week.

Re: Foghorns remembered
I do have recordings of the Tibbett's Point fog horn at Cape Vincent along with a ship blowing the old 3 long fox signal. We grew up with that fog signal, kind of miss those days. I'll convert them to .wav files.

Re: New Coast Guard Icebreaker
Maybe they should consider this new Russian design, this runs sideways for a wider path.

Re: The "Wolfe Islander (1)
Wolfe Islander II and I were born about the same time and I spent my life riding her in the summer, only steered her once. I can still hear the steering engine in my mind as we used to sit on the cover. I was on her a couple times in the winter when the Salvage Monarch used to pull her through the i...

A Wolfe Island observer said Pierre Radisson went by Cape Vincent out onto Lake Ontario and seems to be stopped, probably for the night.

Re: " Sea Stories" Steering by the stars.
Great story! I've steered by the stars a number of times before auto-pilot, a lot easier than watching the compass for hours, still kept an eye on it though. The original manual steering had a keyed tube at the top of the rudder you inserted an emergency tiller through a deck hole you would turn by ...

Re: Abandoned ferry Upper Canada
Forgot that was on the Scruton site. I've known Peggy and the family for years, been in Port Dover many times by land and sea. In 2001 when I saw the Upper Canada all it really needed was minor repair, some paint and a stern bearing. Too bad, she's a neat little boat, got lots of good memories. It w...

Re: Abandoned ferry Upper Canada
I would assume the same guy owns her that I met in 2000, he works out of Lorain. I know the Captain that brought her across from Canada. The stern bearing was a vibration problem. The mold for the bearing is in her engine room. As I recall the owner originally had a buyer in the Caribbean that was g...

Re: Abandoned ferry Upper Canada
She's twin screw. I got wind she was for sale and went down to see her in 2000, had all the engines and generator running, took some video I still have around here somewhere. She needed a stern bearing as I recall. Looked a lot better then of course. I rode her a lot when she ran from Wolfe Island t...

Jackson Princess
Skip Gillham's news article about the Jackson Princess reminded me of the days as kids we rode along on Dougan's Pilot Boat #16 from Horne's Point on Wolfe Island. The Jackson Princess was really dirty and was always a favorite topic of discussion. I always wondered where she went, it was one of the...

Re: What does " running checked down" mean?
The first time I heard check down used was in the 60's when a ship was running too fast for the pilot boat to catch it. Dougan on Horne's Point Pilot Boat #16 would call on 2182 to "check her down". So pilot transfer is a big reason to run checked down.

We met "The Daughters" in the Welland Canal Oct. 1980. We were up-bound with Horne's boat the William Darrell headed for Port Dover for 5 year inspection. Ron Young is at the pilot house door. I had the "Radarman's" van and was able to get this picture, one of my favorites.

Re: 1940-60's Freighter Pilothouse Radio
Unfortunately most all of the old radios from that era got scrapped. I have a collection of AM marine radios from the 60's I have put on the Ham Radio bands. I have seen some stuff appear on E-Bay, found a manual for a Bendix radio we had on my relative's car ferry in 1957, don't have the radio thou...

Calypso diver drowns in Lake Ontario Sept. 1980
In Sept. 1980 an unidentified diver from the Cousteau's Calypso drowned in Lake Ontario. They brought the Calypso into Millhaven, Ontario just west of Kingston. I chased her over there and took the picture below. You can see the hearse on the dock.

Re: Flying Independent aground at Cape Vincent 1963
The rumor was the Army tanks came from Cleveland, not sure what type. I can't remember whether a lake pilot was on board. Today a Master can be his own lake pilot after 16 trips. Back then the master was the Lake pilot or the canal pilot would continue down the river. We used to go out on the pilot ...

Flying Independent aground at Cape Vincent 1963
To add to my pictures in the news photo gallery section: In July 1963, around midnight, the Flying Independent was downbound at Cape Vincent with a reported load of Army Tanks for Vietnam. She got too close to Horne's Point picking up a pilot, pilots at that time came from the Canadian side on Douga...

Re: amhurst islander
Any update on the Amherst Islander? She doesn't appear to have have AIS. The rumor was the steering dies when hot. Not sure what that has for a steering gear, some systems have a manual bypass mode to give the system, and wheelsman, a rest when not manuvering. Tough to keep some of them running stra...

Re: amhurst islander
Sorry to hear about their steering problems. I think I would have run her into Kingston or try and get in touch with one of the ex-engineers that used to be on her.
