Re: 1906 earthquake
I know earthquakes are a little off-topic for the Boatnerds, but there was a lake freighter (the Henry Steinbrenner ) mentioned in the news story! Just as there would be today, there was a “media frenzy” (the 1906 version of fake news) in the wake of the April 18, 1906, San Francisco earthquake. The...

Re: Sarnia layup
Was in Sarnia yesterday and Algoma Enterprse is at the Government dock with Algowood rafted to her. Also noticed tires hanging off outboard side, I imagine Algosteel will raft off her when she is done. You imagined right. Here's a photo of the tug Pride nudging the Steel into place Thursday afterno...

Re: Equinox class
You'll soon see plenty of bow shots of her once she makes her way thru the Seaway Denny. If and when she travels to the upper lakes I will be sure to make it my goal to get some good 'bow - on' photos to share on the Boatnerd site. By then though I'm afraid they'll be old hat.

Re: Good locations along the Rouge River
Photographing is a lot of fun and can be a risky adventure depending on the locale. Unfortunately, the best spots to view and photograph the ‘Boats’ are by their very nature – usually isolated and lonely locations. Urban areas have their own set of dangers - rural and remote country locations have t...

Thanks Garbear and Denny. After about (3) days with no luck getting photos, I went to MarineTraffic just now and was able to view everything. Photos are now downloading. - still using my IE browser. Re: Bannockburn sighting off Marquette?
Is Granite Island below the curvature of the Earth from Marquette? The rule of thumb I remember is, a 6ft. tall man, standing on a beach, level to the water, will see the horizon as being 3 miles out. According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granite_Island_(Michigan) Granite island is ...

U.S. Navy abandoning the Littoral Combat Ship concept
According to defense-aerospace.com the Navy is giving up on the LCS and turning the first 4 into training ships. http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/176873/us-navy-drops-lcs-plans%2C-concept-after-latest-failures.html Here's another link about the future USS Detroit (LCS 7) and oth...

Ship's flags
Is it just me, or are ships on the Great Lakes flying fewer flags these days?
I noticed a lack of House Flags, Courtesy Flags and even Ensigns being displayed. Some vessels don't seem to be flying anything anymore.

Re: Manitoulin length?
[quote="Wawatam"]MarineTraffic.com lists her as 220 meters which is just shy of 663 feet.
CORRECTION - Looks like I converted it right but transposed the 2's - It's listed as 202 meters which is still just shy of 663 feet.

Dumb question here . . . WHY do they change the name to scrap the boat? I understand about reflagging it since the company has given up ownership but why abbreviate the name? There are no dumb questions. After a name change for the trip to the breakers, the easiest and cheapest way to do it, is to ...

Re: Name change for scrap ships
Most often, the trip to the breakers is undertaken by a third party, not the new owner. This sometimes requires that it be re-registered, usually under a new name. Painting over a few letters of the original name to come up with a new one is an expedient solution. It’s also possible that the origina...
