Re: Junking footers?
So it seems that maybe all of the 1000 footers won't be needed in the future, and I get that their length makes them unusable for many places, but couldn't they just cut a few of them down like they did the Frazer? Would the extra width be a deal killer? Bonus- if you did 2 or 3 of these, you could...

Re: Anderson and Clarke
It was stated on Facebook earlier today that the Anderson and Clarke would stay at the wall as standbys this season. Can anyone confirm? This is the first I’ve heard of it. If this is true, it’s pretty shocking that GLF can get by without the three AAAs right now. If such a statement turns out to b...

Re: Northshore Mining to Idle
Isn't the Mustang pellet that the Ironville HBI Plant uses made and shipped from Silver Bay? Mustang is a name for a pellet produced at United Taconite (ex- Eveleth Taconite) and loaded out through Duluth (and possibly sometimes Two Harbors) for a blast furnace at Indiana Harbor. Not sure there was...

Re: Enlarging the Welland Canal and Seaway locks
This has been discussed several times in the past few decades, and each time a combination of factors seems to prevent the idea from gaining much inertia. Some observers point to coastal ports and eastern seaboard railroads and trucking lines flexing their political influence to keep the idea from b...

Re: Hollyhock ice ops
If recall serves, Juniper-class / 225's are primarily designed as buoy tenders, and only have light ice-breaking capabilities. If the ice on the St. Clair River is brash/jammed ice, it's possible such conditions are beyond Hollyhock's specifications.

Re: Bloughs Final Salute
jared you have a very good point. what would her cargo be? It's a distinct possibility that one or two (or more) thousand footers will probably be retired in the next decade or so. Perhaps it's less of a question of what Roger Blough's cargo would be and more of a question of whether the Blough end...

Re: Bloughs Final Salute
How would they go about raising the deck on the blough? I’ve never heard of that before but sounds interesting. A more commonly-used term in the industry than "raising the deck" might be "deepening" or "hull deepening." I'd imagine that if deepening the Blough were a n...

Re: Mark W. Barker
A large enough test cargo to weigh her down to that degree would have to have been delivered directly into her holds by another self-unloading lake freighter. If that kind of operation had been undertaken recently we would likely have seen significant coverage of it, but we did not. A more likely ex...

Re: Twin ports winter layup
Just checked Harbor Lookout and they're showing the American Century due at Duluth on Sunday, January 16th at 2 P.M. however it also shows them "loading ore pellets at CN Duluth Ore Dock also!" Could this then be an error as I don't believe they will keep the Soo Locks open past the closi...

Re: AIS question
The Queen Mary 2 departed Southampton, UK recently for New York as her destination. A day or so out of Southampton the AIS for the QM2 indicated “out of range”. With all the satellite technology how can a huge ship like the QM2 be “out of range” on the AIS? Thanks. Yep. As Roger said, QM2 is not re...

Re: Interlake in the Salt Trade
One of the stated reasons for the construction of the Mark W. Barker is that the vessel will be utilized in the salt trade. Does Interlake currently carry this cargo or is this a new contract for them? Additionally, is this trade currently handled by another fleet? The articulated tug-barge combina...

We had a great trip to Duluth this summer and saw 4 ships go under the bridge. We're thinking we'd like to return to see them come in to "the barn". Looking for suggestions on optimum time frame to make such observations. Maybe the first 48 hours after the closing of the locks? Thanks in ...

The Sykes loaded in Duluth and delivered to Burns Harbor. Any thoughts on whether this is Cliffs using their CML assets to expand its trading patterns seeing the WS is used primarily as a stone boat and with the stone ports closed they can utilize it in new ways? AIS had the Sykes 's location in In...

Re: Kinsman Independent Isle Royale Grounding 1990
It was an unlikely place to ground, being about two dozen miles out of the shipping lane. It happened as I recall since the third mate dosed off and the wheelsman, awake and with working eyes, kept her on course and didn't feel the need to speak up. What were the repercussions of this accident? Fro...

Isn't this the newbuild from Fraser? Anyone know what it is doing at Bay Ship? We should take the following with a grain of salt, because these kind of discussions can be sensitive and we all want regional shipyards and shipping operations to be successful: Some rather vague bits of rumor floating ...
