I have always wondered that too! I heard the US Steel deckhands rode it standing up. Kinda always figured it was a story, like hosing the deck in the winter wearing only brass jockstraps.

My last year of sailing in 2004 I was an OS and made 12 an hour.

A wreck containing remains of the crews that died on them should be off limits to all divers, in my opinion. Sad times for all of us who sailed on the Middletown over the years. Fast and very well built vessel.

As an American sailor, im thankful we have The Jones Act everytime i hear about this atrocity.

I sailed vacation relief on 8 different Oglebay Norton vessels in all 3 departments. I liked decking on the Middletown, but my favorite is the Buckeye. Ironically I live in Buckeye, Arizona.
My least favorite was decking the Columbia Star(Omar) and the Reserve.
