I always go to the Thirsty Pagan at 1623 Broadway in Superior. Outstanding beer, subs and pizza. My favorite beer is their Burntwood Black. Sorry I can't help with a whitefish recommendation.

Re: Nicholson book
I am now reading this book and it is, indeed, truly excellent. I especially like the focus on the experiences of the men who owned and sailed the ships, rather then just the ships. I say "well done" to Emory A. Massman, Jr. and the MHSD.

Re: How did they open the telescoping hatches on Jame E. Fer
Speaking of the June calendar photo of the James E. Ferris, the picture was taken by Jim Kidd in June 1972 from the Bluewater Bridge. In the background there appears to be a small crane ship working next to a capsized hull? Can someone tell me what's going on there? You can see the photo on this pag...

Re: Chefs
According to the Fall 2011 issue of Power Ships , American Commercial Lines (ACL), as part of a cost-saving measure, has eliminated the position of cook on its towboats. Crew members will now prepare their own meals. I wonder if the company purchases the food, or do they give the crew an allowance t...

Re: Next scrap sub coming
A couple of questions regarding these subs:
1. For the tow, why do they have to be loaded on a floating drydock or barge?
2. For the ones that are being scrapped, why are they being cut up so far inland? Are there no places on the Canadian east coast where this could be done?
Thanks!

Re: New Cribs in Two Harbors
I visited the Edna G. in Two Harbors in July. My tour guide told me they are building a new marina next to the lighthouse. She said a lot of taconite dust blows off the ore dock when it is windy and wondered if the pleasure boats at the marina would have to deal with the dust settling on their decks.

Re: Halifax
It was stated here that "someone" should turn one of these ships into a museum. It wasn't specified who "they" are to do this work, but I thought this article in the August issue of Naval History about museum ships provides some insight into the challenges involved. The article d...

Ships waiting in Duluth
Why do ships waiting to load in Duluth-Superior anchor outside the harbor? With so few ships now as compared to years ago, I would think there would be plenty of dock space where they could tie up and wait. Is it because they would have to pay a fee to wait at a dock? Or is it because many of the ol...

I visited HMCS Haida (which also served in WW2) in Hamilton four years ago and it is well worth the time. One of the docents was a former radio operator and he showed me how all the communication gear worked and described how they had replaced all of the electronic equipment which had been removed b...

Captain Metz, what was it that made the Willowglen a better sea boat then the Beechglen? To my uneducated eye they look very similar. Thanks!
