Re: Sunken fish tug
Looks like they may have had some kind of breakdown, as after passing the Apostle Islands they did an abrupt turn, and at about 3 KT's speed headed to Washburn, WI and are at a dock there next to the marina.

Heavy weather
Noted that ships are avoiding mid Lake Superior, running up the north side for instance. The James R Barker is north of Michipicoten Island heading to Duluth. The wind is out of the northeast, 28 knots in mid-lake.

Heritage has been planning to have a tug based in Two Harbors for some time to assist vessels there. Maybe it finally happened.

Re: Ships Scrapped in Duluth
Here is a picture of the Alfred Krupp taken in August 1974 at Hyman Michels scrapyard which evidently was scrapped there in 1975. Also another picture of the scrapyard which shows a pilothouse being used as an office or whatever there. Has anyone ever figured out what vessel it came from?

American Spirit problem?
The American Spirit left its winter layup dock yesterday to load iron ore pellets at the CN dock in Duluth with the aid of 2 G-Tugs, which seemed to make sense as the CN slip likely was ice filled. Today she left the CN slip evidently as a dead ship tow with 2 G-Tugs, and returned to the Port Termin...

IRVIN L. CLYMER
I see that the Irvin L Clymer celebrates its 100th birthday today. It was scrapped some time ago, but the pilothouse still exists in Duluth.

Icebreaking Duluth-Superior harbor
The USCG Alder was out Thursday March 16 on its initial icebreaking trip for the 2017 season. Aboard were guests from the Lake Superior Marine Museum and this 35 minute video, the link below, was shot on this trip. The attached picture shows the course that it ran, starting with moving a buoy that w...

Re: LORAN tower at Duluth
That tower was a support for an antenna wire that ran from the lighthouse building at the end of the pier to that tower. The antenna was for a radio-direction-finder station located there. In the days before Loran & GPS, this and many other RDF stations allowed ships to determine where they were...

G-Tug breakdown
I was watching on AIS the G-Tug Huron helping the Burns Harbor into its layup berth in Superior, and noticed that it was no longer doing anything. Then a little later the tug North Carolina was helping the CSL Assiniboine leave the ore-dock in Duluth and helping it head out of the Duluth Entry. When...

Algoway leaving Duluth
This video taken this morning shows that 17 degrees below zero doesn't stop dedicated Duluth boatnerds from watching ships head out. The Algoway brought in a load of salt yesterday.

The Duluth harbor is quickly getting iced in. This evening the tug Nels J has been doing some ice breaking up river and looks like it will be escorting the Arthur M Anderson when it heads out in a while.

Ships waiting for weather
Although it is relatively calm here in Duluth, evidently it is pretty windy out in mid Lake Superior. There are 5 ships anchored just off Duluth this morning, Cason J Callaway, Edgar B Speer, Paul R Tregurtha, American Mariner, and the Walter J McCarthy Jr.

Re: Steamship Vega
Thanks, Brian.
It is amazing that for a ship running under the name Vega for almost 30 years that there is practically zero information anywhere. I found only one other picture of it with that name in the Bowling Green State University Historical Collections.

Steamship Vega
I picked this picture up at a yard sale this last weekend. The ship is the Vega, home port is Fairport. The Vega is shown leaving through the Duluth entry on an unknown date. There is a Vega which was wrecked in a November 1905 storm, and the registry was closed in December 1905, and evidently was n...
