Thanks, Paul. BTW, the latest Great Lakes Ice Forecast text can be found at: https://www.weather.gov/cle/GreatLakesIce_text

I don't think the ice will build any thicker on Lake Erie at this time, as the cold air is transient. Until it does, ice thickness will remain much the same. Today's rainfall over the Lower Lakes doesn't help any, either.

Some numerical weather prediction models show colder air locking into place for most of February and into early-March over the eastern-half of the US and Canada. If this does pan out, then Lake Erie could be completely ice covered by the end of February.

Daily Ice Charts of the Great Lakes

Unread post by Paul Beesley »

The Canadian Ice Service provides daily ice charts which indicate both the amount of ice and its thickness.
These ice charts cover both Canadian & US waters.

The two attached charts are from January 22, 2019.

Currently the Western Basin of Lake Erie is between 90 and 100% ice covered. It is mostly new ice, but
a few more days of freezing weather will rapidly make this ice much thicker.

Daily ice charts can be viewed at:
https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-cl ... tions.html

Once there, pick the Great Lakes area on the map. Then choose the daily ice chart of your interest.
