Well there were actually two different Buckeye's that preceded the most recent one.

There was the Leonard B. Miller of 1910 which became the buckeye in 1974 and was with Columbia until 1979. This buckeye survived until 1995, and was still named Buckeye till the end, just in different colors and operated as a barge after 1979.

Before that one there was the David M. Whitney of 1901, which was the Buckeye with Columbia from 1943-1969 and scrapped.

So if it was the Buckeye before the Sparrows Point became the Buckeye in 1991, then that would make it the Miller, from 1910.

Could you contact me directly? I have a few more questions. sh71382 at aol dot com

Buckeye wheel

Unread post by leadking »

I have, what is claimed to be, the wheel and stand from the predecessor of the current Buckeye. Is there anyone familiar with this ship which was scrapped in the early 1950's?

Thanks
Lee
