Just going by what I've actually heard I think the Alpena is the loudest. Nothing like the mass/pressure of steam without an unloader elevator in front of it!

Historically speaking, one the Best horns I ever heard was that on the Adam E. Cornelius, now the Sarah Spencer. It was deep, very loud and cut out instantly instead of trailing off as most steam horns did.

Can anyone tell me which vessel both U.S and Canadian seem to have the loudest sounding horns or whistles on the Great Lakes? Two that come to mind on the U.S. are the Paul R. Tregurtha and the American Century. In fact, I vote that the Century's is one if not the loudest I've ever heard. Another one would have to be the Alpena and though she is laid-up, I vote for the Ryerson also. Anyone care to add in their vote for the loudest horn on the lakes?
