I sailed on the Ralph H. Watson from fit-out to lay-up in '79. She wasn't fast, but she was in good shape. 1980 she sailed something like 2 months, laid up, and never sailed again. I know a lot of USS/GLF boats met that same fate at that time.

The 80s in particular were rough. Perfectly good ships were being towed away 2 and 3 at a time.

These are fantastic. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how many of these ships I have seen in my short 22 years of life that are now in the historic category. It brings back some good memories. I used to wonder what it must have been like to live through the 80s and the late 90s with so many familiar ships going to the boneyard, but the last six years have shown me how sad it is to see. So glad that we can keep them alive with these photos and our memories of them.

Really like those images of the Algocape! That had to be one of the best looking ships of its time. I'm not sure but I thought I had read somewhere that its design was somewhat based off the Amship vessels built during the 1950s such as the Ernest T. Weir, George M. Humphrey, etc. but I may be thinking of something else. Regardless, I remember the first time I saw this vessel in the early 1980s when it was still the Carol Lake as it sailed past the Algonac State Park. Growing up in the 1980s, I always felt that I had missed out on some of the best times for ship watching but your pictures from this era has made me realize that I was actually fortunate given the changes in the lakes fleet we have seen since that era. The salties were definitely a more interesting breed back then. I think I speak for many when I say thank you for sharing your wonderful collection in this forum.

A few more. I've posted another shot of the Hydra. This photo was 12/3/90. She looks pretty much to be in a white light trim in this photo and the previous photo a definite 2 green light starboard list.

Excellent pictures garbear. I have a question about the one of the Hydra loading at Harvest States #2. It has a big list to starboard. Is that common in loading to list that much or is the ice giving it a little push to the dock making things a little difficult? Thanks in advance. Keep the pics coming

I know when I sailed the mate's would sometimes load to a list to get the water out of either the port or starboard side ballast tanks.

Nice to see a few pictures of the original boats as we knew them before the sixties.

Great photos of the steamer Algocape not many exist, harbour ice in November, now your lucky if you have ice at Christmas!

She was/is my favourite boat. A perfect example of the Collingwood look of the early Seaway days.
