Post subject:  Edmund Fitzgerald Windlass

In Robert Hemming's book Gales of November he mentions the forward windlass tearing from its mounts and ripping a hole through the bow plating when the Edmund Fitzgerald hit the bottom of Lake Superior. Is this based on the actual discovery of the windlass at the wreck site or on the large hull tear that shows up in U.S. Coast Guard drawings of the bow section wreckage?

Reading more like a historical fiction novel than most other books on the subject, I was wondering if the author took some artistic liberties while developing certain aspects of this work.
