Shearmet Recycling Ltd. purchased the assets of Western Metals in 1984 after the latter went into receivership in December 1983. The completion of the scrapping of the Horace Johnson was completed by Shearmet at Thunder Bay 15 May 1985. The John Hulst demolition had been begun by Western Metals on 23 November 1983 but completed by Shearmet in September 1986. The August Ziesing was sold to Hyman-Michaels on 1 July 1984 (as were the B. F. Affleck and Joshua A. Hatfield) but resold to Shearmet, arriving at Thunder Bay 5 October 1985. Apparently Shearmet suffered its own financial problems in the winter of 1985-1986 and the vessel was resold to ULS International for breaking up at the Algoma Steel Dock at Port Colborne, completed in November 1986. The Affleck was resold to Port Colborne Marine Terminals by Hyman Michaels and arrived for demolition at Port Colborne on 25 November 1986. The Hatfield was the only one of the bunch to be broken up by Hyman Michaels, arriving at the Azcon dock at Duluth on 1 June 1988 almost four years after its sale.

In late 1983 USS sold five of its steamers, B. F. Affleck, Horace Johnson, Joshua Hatfield, John Hulst, and August Ziesing to Western Metals for scrapping. Of these, only the Hulst and Johnson were scrapped at Thunder Bay. If I'm not mistaken, didn't Western Metals go out of business in early 1984 and that resulted in the balance of these vessels being resold to Hyman-Michaels for scrapping?
