Will there be an ebook available?

Hi, this is Brett Ortler; I'm the editor over at Adventure Publications, which published Sea Stories. We included the Algoport image partly because of its connection to the lakes, but mostly because of its dramatic effect. In the book, Captain Metz's fine storytelling puts the reader right into the action, and as you know, there are number of stories about wrecks and near misses. While the interior of the book is replete with photos from Captain Metz's collection (and those graciously provided by fellow sailors/boatwatchers he knows), there just aren't photos from most of those white-knuckle type of events.

Given the constant interest in ships and shipwrecks, we wanted to include the Algoport image to give folks an idea of what such a sinking actually looks like, so we jumped at the chance. The cover seemed like just the place to do so, as it certainly grabs one's attention and it really does reflect how interesting/exciting the stories in the book are.

Our end goal is to get people to read Captain Metz's work, and covers, as you might imagine, play a huge role in making that happen. Experts such as yourself will certainly notice the Algosoo, and probably the saltie on the front cover. In fact, I mentioned both of these images to our design crew when the cover was in the works, but they sold me on it this way: it's a minor inconsistency, yes, but that is a relatively small price to pay if the covers entice a whole new group of readers to pick up the book and purchase it. We went through a number of cover options, including many vintage images, and they just don't have the same visual appeal (or are not large enough to use, unfortunately).

So we opted in favor of shelf appeal. That decision was the right one, I think, as I want Captain Metz's work to be read far and wide, and this is the best way to go about it.

Brett Ortler

Thanks for that update and information Roger. So sad and sorry to see that event being cancelled at the Maritime Center as I enjoyed the one I went to back in the late 2000s. Without looking it up I do not recall what year but, 50/50 it was in 2009 when you were up there then? That year the Authorama was excellent taking nothing away of course from other years. I recall meeting you and having my pic taken with you as well. There was also several others as well there and among them were Chris Winters who had just come out with his book on the St. Marys Challenger along with another good guy Ric Mixter and also the Out of the Blue Production folks as well. I also remember meeting a few authors that did books on the Daniel J. Morrell and Dennis Hale and one of the authors their last name was Kadar? Too bad though that the event did not last as I was really looking forward to someday making it back up there and seeing some of them. I've never got the chance to meet with some of them and my mind is drawing a blank as to some of them but, I'm sure somebody out there can help me with a few that were there in the past! One that comes to mind is Paul Beesley I believe it is from the Welland Canal area? Too bad we can't have a few authors at the Marine Marts sometime out in St. Clair as that would be a neat idea to try as far as having a few of them there. Just my thoughts, ideas and suggestions only. Thanks again Roger!

Did a search for Captain Metz and his new book and found out that there are a few online sites available such as Amazon along with the Barnes and Noble as well. So Yes, you can order his book online from various sources and websites for anyone that is interested. I plan to place my order soon for his book. What would be nice is if there was a way to have Captain Metz attend the Autorama event that is held at the Maritime Center in Port Huron this November. I'd go to that then in a split second to buy my copy and have it signed by him then.

I had a lot of request to when my new book Sea Stories will be for sale, you can order my book by calling 1-800-678-7006 for $ 12.95. It is the same book that I wrote 10 years ago. The only difference is the Publisher did not add the stories of my shipwreck diving.
