Rail car capacities vary all over the place, but many modern aluminum coal gondolas can carry roughly 115 to 120 tons of coal per car.

Other commodities (iron ore, grain, aggregate) typically are shipped in steel cars which have capacities in the 100 to 110 ton range.

I've seen this around, now I can't find it. Need the comparison that lists how many railcars and/or trucks that would be needed to move the same amount of cargo as a 1,000-footer.
