If Captain McSorley had run the regular LCA course taking them Manitou to Whitefish Pt they still would have proceeded on a basic SE course with a following sea as they had anyway. This course would have been shorter by several hours and would have taken them well south of the I'll fated passing of Caribou Island on the North side.

If she hadn't been delayed 235 minutes in getting unloaded at the A and B Dock at Ashtaubula, Ohio on November 5, 1975, then on the next trip, she could have possibly reached Whitefish Bay before the full brunt of the storm enveloped her. The delay was due to the railroad having problems getting enough railcars to the dock.

A point of curiousity - Had the Edmund Fitzgerald taken the southern (shortest) route across Lake Superior at a normal operating speed, instead of the going a longer northern route near Isle Royale, over to North of Micipicoten Island, and then toward the Soo, would they have made it to Whitefish Point before the storm reached full force? Or would this have put them somewhere between the Kewanaw and Whitefish point and crossways to the waves when things got bad?
