I would think the last time was during the iron ore miner's strike in Michigan and Minnesota in 1977 that small vessels such as Ontadoc and Pic River carried iron ore. The strike caused such a shortage of iron ore, that many American ore carriers made the trip to either Picton, Ontario or the Gulf of St. Lawrence to load ore.

That was the year that Ontadoc had the mishap with the Hulett unloader at the Union Dock in Ashtaubula, as you mentioned.

Reading the story very interesting an accident happened which the hullet damaged the cargo hold of the Ontadoc 2 question is when was the last time a ship as small as Ontadoc carried a load of ore?
