Apparently this may be the future of steel making in Michigan. For months there have been rumors about a new steel mill project in Durand, MI. Well, it was finally mentioned in Crain's Detroit.

Since a primary finance component is receiving a $7 billion loan from the federal government, I'm not holding my breath.

For those who don't know where Durand is, it is between Lansing and Flint, about as far from navigable water as you can get in Michigan. Any ore or semi-refined iron going there would have to go by rail or truck. ( And remember that Michigan allows massive 164,000 pound trucks and is also a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, so if this mill ever gets built, perhaps the ore will come from Saginaw, Detroit or Toledo by driverless truck).
