Heard the griffin and the algosee this morning discussing the ice conditions at Naticoke on channel 12
They agreed not to work ice in the dark and wait until first light tomorrow before proceeding outbound

Thanks for the input. The Algoma Hansa is still making regular runs between Sarnia and Nanticoke. It is expected to lay up in Erie PA SOMETIME!

Nanticoke stacks are scheduled to be imploded on February 28th 2018 at 7:30 AM. The rest of the place will be demolished by 2019 or 2020.

Sad day for shipping, since there is one less place for them to ship coal.

It's been a few years since the plant received coal.

The Steel plant dock
The old hydro 1 generating station dock to the east is no longer used as the hydro plant is now closed however tankers awaiting the Esso refinery dock which is next to the hydro dock tie up there waiting there turn at esso
The esso refinery dock is east of the hydro dock same channel
Of note is the hydro smoke stacks are going to be torn down next year
There will be a 3 mile exclusion area when they blow them up
The stacks are next to the hydro and esso dock
Not sure how this might affect shipping

In addition to ore pellets, the Stelco steel mill receives inbound cargoes of coal (to make coke) and occasionally flux stone (limestone and dolomite). Outbound cargoes from the mill are mainly limited to slag.

Right now it is mostly Algoma tankers that are unloading fuel cargos from Sarnia and will then re-load for Sarnia. During the shipping season CSL ships will deliver ore cargoes to Nanticoke. A few times during the shipping season, you might find some 1,000 footers carrying ore down to Nanticoke but not often. Last year I think there were only two loads handled by the 1,000 footers as the bulk of it was carried by CSL ships. As mentioned above, the Algoma tankers will be on runs unloading and at times loading cargos from Nanticoke. I’ve seen foreign tankers go in there as well along with some salties to load. Not sure of what some of the cargos are that are loaded and exported as perhaps someone else may know that one. Hope this answers some of your questions here.

I know they receive pellets from here in the Twin Ports/North Shore for the Stelco Lake Erie Works. On AIS I've seen tankers also go in there.

Are ships loading or unloading at Nanticoke? What is it they transport?
