Sturgeon Bay Activity
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Sorry about that it was the PRT. Tried to do it from memory. I was on the road to the U.P. when I made the posting.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The graving dock order posted by Bayship was PRT, then Cort. Pretty sure PRT just came out and Cort just went in. Blough was the very first in. Victory/Pierson will be the 4th. That's at all that was on the schedule.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Can't be the barker at sturgeon bay, the barker is laid up at smet in superior.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Barker? I'm sure you mean PRT.Bob+ wrote:Today, the barker was removed from the graving dock and court was towed into the dock and the barker was tied up on berth 15.
Bilge rat, I also worked at Bay Ship from 1975 to 1990. I was on the crane crew.

Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Thanks Bob+, for all you do, really! Bay Ship Building was my first real job I had. The BEST job I every had. I miss it dearly. I really enjoy all of you info!! Thank You.Bob+ wrote:Today the tug Michigan/barge Great Lakes came through Sturgeon Bay from the bay of Green Bay. It was escorted by the Mobile Bay and the tug Barbara Andrie and it cleared the canal and entered Lake Michigan around 1600hrs, cst.
My guess of the first boat to leave Bay Ship, probably would be the Block. The Block is usually the last in and the first to leave. Unknown now since they do not load out of Escanaba anymore. I haven't spoke with anyone from Bay Ship in awhile.

Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Bob+, I would like to ask you what is your best guess when the the first ship will leave Sturgeon Bay this spring. Give or take a week or two?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Several people have asked me if there is any "bunching up" when boats leave Sturgeon Bay at the end of layup, or if it is instead dispersed over days and or even weeks. Not knowing, I guessed the latter since I couldn't think of a good reason for the former. What do any of you know?
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Looking at the alignment of the two bridges on Google EDarth, I can see what you mean! Was the back and forth motion of the boat itself, which only amounted to a few feet, part of that relieving?Guest wrote:The problem there is that there is a 30 degree course change there and the vessel must be lined up for both bridges before proceeding through the first one. It takes a lot of relieving of the ice in that basin to shift a vessel 30 degrees so it can proceed. Not related to bridge structure.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The Joseph L. Block arrived for lay up today January 19th during the morning for anyone tracking her movements. Still yet to come though is the 1,000 footer Mesabi Miner which should be arriving for lay up sometime this weekend. Hope that all of this helps out.

Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
When the Cort arrived, the tug William Gaynor spent a lot of time breaking up ice immediately around the Cort prior to its passage through the new bridge, and the Cort itself made several back and forth movements before passage. Someone asked why all of this happened, and couldn't the Cort break ice for itself. I offered a wild guess answer. Having seen the Cort come up the canal, pushing tons of ice aside, I wondered if all of that action had to do with protecting the bridge from damage that could result from the Cort pushing masses of ice aside and against the bridge foundations. So, how far off was I?
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The Court arrived first today, followed by the Munson and the Callaway. The Court was berthed on 15, the Munson backed into berth 12 and it looked like the Callaway was going to raft out b oard of the Blough or Court.
The Sturgeon Bay ship canal was lined up with several boatnerds, taking photos of the Court entering the canal. Later, the boatnerds were again taking photos of the boats going through the downtown bridges. WLUK TV out of Green Bay had a reporter on the bridge , hopefully they will put the footage up on their website.

Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The Paul R Tregurtha is going into the large graving dock Monday for its repairs.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
Friday morning, the Blough was removed from the graving dock and was tied up on the face dock. I believe the Pierson will be the next boat to go into the graving dock.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The Robert Pierson arrived in Sturgeon Bay and was off of Bay Ship at 0900hrs. The Kuber was moved from the berth and was left out in the ice while the Pierson was backed into berth 9 stern first with the assistance of the Selvick tugs.
Re: Sturgeon Bay Activity
The tug Michigan and barge Great Lakes left Bay Ship and headed out toward Lake Michigan and it appeared after clearing the Oregon St bridge the tug got stuck in the ice trying to make the turn in the channel. The Michigan was assisted by the tug Barbara Andrie and it appeared the tug was having a little problem with the ice. The Mobile Bay broke away from the dock and assisted the Michigan and then cleared a path to Lake Michigan.
