There are only two pilot boats on Lake Ontario; Port Weller and at the eastern end of the lake at Cape Vincent so that is one reason so many salties anchor off Port Dalhousie. Many, like the current vessel, are waiting for a clear dock at Redpath Sugar in Toronto. Tankers often anchor waiting to go into Clarkson or Bronte or even Hamilton. They might be waiting for the dock to be clear or they might have unloaded and come to the anchorage to clean tanks before loading another cargo. Sometimes they have brought cargo in and don't have one ready to take out so they wait. Chemical cargoes including gasoline are very high value so the wait is worth it. By anchoring in Port Dalhousie they are well placed to go up the canal if something comes from up the lakes or proceed down the river to the numerous refineries etc along the St. Lawrence or the east coast. Bulkers have waited for the same reasons. Lakers only seem to anchor for weather or if there is congestion in the canal.

Well, that explains it. Has there been an uptick in the ammount of them sitting out there lately? Maybe within the last year or so.

Since I starting watching the Welland Canal (2009-2010), there has often been ships in the Port Dalhousie anchorage. Some are waiting for a berth in Toronto (usually Redpath Sugar), some for pilots, but most for berths in Oakville or Clarkson or Mississauga. Salties headed to Oakville or Clarkson or Mississauga anchor off Port Dalhousie because pilots are available from Port Weller, but (i'm guessing) not on the north side of the lake.

For example, Algocanada is currently anchored off Oakville. I don't recall noticing a saltie anchored there.

I've noticed (maybe it's just because of AIS now) that a lot of boats (salties mostly?) have been anchored out there lately. Not sure if they always have been or if this is something new, but sometimes there's multiple ships sitting & waiting for whatever reason.

Port Weller Anchorage ?

Yesterday afternoon around 1430, we were at Port Dalhousie and there was a boat at anchor. Looked like a possible Fed. Nav. Boat. Does anyone know who it was?
