Light Vessel No. 98 Buffalo

Unread post by Keith M Steffke »

I have just added some new photos in the Public Gallery, under models, of a commission I recently completed for a client of one of the rarer Great Lakes Light Vessels. Light Vessel No. 98 was launched in June of 1914 and was one of only a handful of the popular, but misnamed, "semi-whaleback" lightships that were built just before World War One. Built at Muskegon Michigan by the Racine Truscott Shell Lake Boat Co., the LV No. 98 was put in commission outside of Buffalo harbor to replace the ill-fated LV No. 82 (also named "Buffalo"), that was lost with all hands during the Great Storm of 1913. It is interesting to note that the Government service these ships served, (whether Lighthouse Service or Coast Guard, etc), Always referred to the vessel by its Number (i.e. "L.V. No. 98"), as the station names were changed as the vessels were reassigned periodically. I hope you find this model as interesting to look at, as I did in researching and making it. Keith M. Steffke
