On the Great Lakes there are Lakes Carrier Association recommended routes overlaid on charts.
Nothing says a boat must follow these, but they are often used as guidelines.
Here is a link for Western Lake Erie:

Go to a search engine such as Yahoo! and type in Great Lakes Navigation charts and that will lead you to a link. They have a general catalog you can order, but it also has charts listed for all the Lakes. Find the Lake Erie chart and that should help you with what you need. You can order charts online from them.
Also, the AIS sites will show boat location and if you click on the individual boat icon it will tell you location and destination. Go to the Vessel Passages on the homepage of this site and it has AIS locations.
I'm pretty long winded, so I'm sure someone can tell you the same thing in 25 words or less.
