I doubt if you'll ever see "all of the boats" sail again. To me there is no need for a U.S. laker that can only haul ore. There are no U.S. Great Lakes ports where she can unload, except maybe Ashtabula. When was the last time the bridge cranes were used in Indiana Harbor? Would love to see the Ryerson run again, but I think she will go the way of the many other lakers. She'll sail again at the end of a towline as she goes overseas for scrapping. Sad to see her in the slip across from CHS every time I go to Superior.Jerry at Duluth wrote:The Ryerson was a good earner on the Hamilton fun and on several trips, she hauled manganese ore from Quebec to Indiana Harbor, on the return trip. On the last trip in 2009, they received orders to proceed to Fraser Ship Yard and prepare the vessel for long term layup. At that time, there was a surplus of vessels and the Canadian ships were looking for a back haul cargo down the Seaway. They were willing to haul the Ryerson's cargos at a rate that was cheaper than hauling with the Ryerson. When all of the boats are sailing again and the rates are back up, you will probably see the Ryerson return to service.

Possible answer to Q3: US ore to QC then Labrador ore to Hamilton then in ballast back to Lake Superior.Odysseus wrote:I think the bigger questions are these:ivan wrote:What would the Ryerson haul for a backhaul cargo?
1. The Ryerson 5 year survey. It' probably due. Does the cost for that outweigh the benefit of bringing her out?
2. What's in it for ArcelorMittal? Essentially, they own the Ryerson in one way or another. How does this benefit them and their bottom line?
3. Your back-haul question is legit. If she did come out, then her back-haul cargos are going to be very limited due to vessel design, which might make her too expensive to run if just downbound loaded and upbound empty.
Just my initial thoughts, FWIW and $0.02.

Re: Canadian Ships Loading In Two Harbors
Might the Ryerson be useful in handling this increased volume to Quebec City?

Way more !Guest wrote:Fine, but, Is that more, less, or about the same as in other years?Guest wrote:Quebec City is supposed to receive at least 2.5 millions tons of Ore by CSL and Algoma, arriving from USA.
Heading to Quebec City, Whitefish Bay, CSL Assiniboine, Algoma Harvester, Algoma Mariner (Tim S. Dool in grain) and most of the lakers upbound for Duluth and Two Harbour will go to Quebec.

The Algoma Harvester is still loading at Two Harbors this a.m., but I see her AIS is showing a Quebec City destination. Also, CSL Assiniboine departed BNSF #5 late last night and her AIS is also showing a Quebec City destinatio

I see the Latimer is heading down the Lake after departing Two Harbors and is showing a Hamilton destination on her AIS. Next Canadian laker due in Two Harbors is the Jackman and she's currently East of Outer Island in the Apostles. An aside. I see the Whitefish Bay has just departed BNSF #5 and is showing a Quebec City destination. Currently the CSL Assiniboine is inbound Superior for BNSF #5.

Re: Canadian Ships Loading In Two Harbors
I was thinking about Nanticoke, too, but the unloading dock at Stelco only takes self-unloaders, so G3 Marquis and Algoma Harvester couldn't unload there.

Are these movements of iron ore pellets going to Hamilton, or down the Seaway for eventual movement overseas?

Re: Canadian Ships Loading In Two Harbors
I see on the Port of Quebec's website three possible loads that may be going there from Lake Superior ports? They list the following the Algoma Transport, Tim S. Dool and the Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin all due there I guess it is in the month of April. Besides Hamilton could any of these Ore loads possibly be heading to Nanticoke as well maybe? I know CSL usually takes shipments to Nanticoke but could Algoma possibly be loading a few cargoes as well and taking them to Nanticoke besides Hamilton and possibly Quebec? It was just a thought and idea is all that I had and nothing more than that.
