No one said they were going to be done prior to the new 650's arriving. When they arrive, the Way and Rail will most definitely be done

I believe the Algoway (and Algorail) would have been done a few years ago if Algoma had not ran into problems with the Chinese shipyard. I may be mistaken...but I'm not complaining as it will be tough to see these two go as did the Agawa Canyon quite a few years ago now.

I agree with you Guest about the rumors as for years I've heard and read that Algosteel was done also. Well take and look around as she is still sailing today. Also what happened with the Algorail as she is still in lay-up and I thought the plan was that Algoma would run both the Way and Rail this year? Sorry to go off subject and topic here.

Has nothing to do with her engines or lack of self unloading system (she was built to be a straight deck grain carrier, and many new straight deck grain carriers have recently been built). The high tensile steel she was constructed with allowed for the hull to be built lighter translating through to higher cubes. That thinner steel is now at the point of being too wasted to economically replace.

this is the same reason the Aird went early

Who has provided credible information to confirm the scrapping of the Pineglen?

I think as soon as CSL and Algoma started thinking about new builds they stopped putting money in any of the older ships that were not the new for body ones.

Don't have to worry about the Tadoussac for a few years yet as she had the major refit in 2001. She has the side tanks and CSL put a ton of money into her.

RIP Pineglen - Aka "Piney". Although to be honest, I started to get concerned when she started spending these year long stints in layup. Thankful I got to basque in her glorious presence while I could.

But, she won't be forgotten. Atleast not here.
Wasn't there something about the construction of the Pineglen that puts it at a disadvantage in comparison to other similarly designed vessels built during the late 1970s-early 1980s?
Lack of self unloader system, mainly. Supposedly her hull is made out of high tensile steel, so it's not a matter of being soft.

The steel in her is really bad every trip to Thunder Bay she had to repair cracks csl put captains on her that would baby her the past few years it had little to do with fuel consumption

Apparently the Pineglen burns a lot of fuel compared to the Cedarglan. Oakglens days are numbered.
Why are the Oakglen's days numbered? I don't think it suffers from the same fuel issues as the Pineglen, nor have I heard about any chronic structural issues. You may very well be right, I'm just wondering how you reached your conclusion.

It will be a shame to see the last lake vessel built by Collingwood Shipyards go to the breakers. I recall that yard having some labor troubles during its last few years of operation. I guess that is only natural as anyone during that era could see the writing was on the wall in that there would be no new ship construction coming anytime soon.

To Don Detloff thanks for posting the great and excellent photos of her that you were lucky and fortunate enough to see and get at the time. A very nice and excellent photo of her if I may say so on her that you got. This is a bit off subject but, in all of the times I've been to the Soo believe it or not folks never once did I ever see the Atlantic Huron and the Nanticoke I only saw her once but did not get photos due to my shutter on the camera being stuck back then!

I know how you feel and can sympathize and feel your pain, Denny. I never saw the Pineglen in her red paint scheme while upbound, unfortunately. I count myself lucky that I got to see her at all now. Who would have thought even ten years ago that a ship like the Pineglen would be considered a classic and "throwback to the good old days of the 90s" when there were still a lot more classic boats sailing? How times do change!
