Technically it's not in the channel but it's very tight along there on the turn, especially for footers. Definitely a hazard, why risk it? Always better safe than sorry........Rob wrote:So, I don't understand why the St. Mary's River is closed when the ship is not in the channel, thus not obstructing navigation.

Re: Calumet aground?
Suction more then wake caused by displacement of water of vessel passing.Best guess is wake concerns from passing vessels
Re: Calumet aground?
It looks like they're letting the vessel traffic resume. They're a bunch of vessels exiting the St. Mary's River system on AIS as I type this at 0425 Saturday morning.
I feel bad though for the people that bought tickets for the Boatnerd Detroit River Cruise. The grounding will screw up their opportunity to see a lot of these boats.

Best guess is wake concerns from passing vessels, regardless of their speed, and how that may impact the "impact" Calumet has suffered. (Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun. I hope the moderators don't mind too much.)Rob wrote:So, I don't understand why the St. Mary's River is closed when the ship is not in the channel, thus not obstructing navigation.
Seriously though, my guess is so the stranded Calumet doesn't suffer further damage from passing vessels while grounded. Similar speed restrictions and cautionary edicts were issued last year when the Blough was stuck at Gros Cap. Standard operating procedure for a matter like this. Closing the river may seem extreme, but the Calumet grounding is at a turn in a relatively tight part of the channel. Makes sense when you think about it in the bigger picture.

Here's one of many great photos by Rod Burdick. It's just East of the Cut River Bridge on US 2.Marcus wrote:How can next port of call be in Brevort, Michigan? If you look at a map it's off US 2, and there's no inlet or docks.

Sand Products has operated a dock next to its sand pits west up US 2, about a half mile or so from bustling downtown Brevort, since the late '60s, at least.

Divers are in the water as of 10:30 a.m.

If you have AIS, check out the Calumet. Speed 0.0 above Mission Point. Reporting no damage, injuries or pollution. Algowood coming up at a slow speed.
