Stiffeners and ballast stone - delivery trips
Re: Stiffeners and ballast stone - delivery trips
What is involved in removing deck stiffeners ?
Re: Stiffeners and ballast stone - delivery trips
Deck stiffeners don't stabilize the hull, they stiffen it. Primarily for vertical bending (ie hogging and sagging) but probably for torsion as well. Ocean waves are much bigger and a different shape than freshwater waves so they will place stresses on the hull that it would likely never experience on freshwater.Guest wrote:Does ballast stone have the same hull stabilizing effect as deck stiffeners ?

Two sentences from http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/whitefishbay.htm
"She successfully arrived at Montreal on July 9 where she stayed until July 21st having the temporary hull strengthening removed that had been installed for the deep sea voyage, in addition to other minor modifications to prepare her for entering service on the Great Lakes."
and
"Her first port of call was Windsor ON to unload a partial cargo of ballast stone that had been loaded in China for extra stability during the Pacific crossing."

Re: Stiffeners and ballast stone - delivery trips
the Trillium Class ships had stiffeners, they just weren't clearly visible like the ones on the equinox vessels.
The Ballast stone is carried because its more tonnage than water in the ballast tanks. you wouldn't want a ship crossing the ocean sitting high for several weeks.

Stiffeners and ballast stone - delivery trips
Did CSL's two Trillium class bulkers have deck stiffeners on their delivery trip ? I'm pretty sure they didn't yet all the Equinox class bulkers did have them.
Does ballast stone have the same hull stabilizing effect as deck stiffeners ? If so, why didn't the Algoma bulkers carry this instead of using deck stiffeners ? The stone could have been unloaded by shore side cranes in a short time rather than the week or so required to remove the stiffeners.
Lastly, are the deck stiffeners bolted in place or welded ?
TIA for all answers.
