Re: Photo Collection
Thanks for all the pictures Garbear. I enjoyed every photo and the information you shared on them. I really enjoyed this thread.

Thanks, Hugh. I appreciate your words. The project sort of helped re-kindle a good time in my life. Guess once you get into your 60's you start seeing your mortality and this helped take me back to a younger time. Glad I could do it.hugh3 wrote:Yes, Garbear, you have made a major contribution to the Boatnerd site. I wouldn't worry about perfection in posting your choice of photos, I think anything you wish to offer would be well received. I have photographed ships for over 30 years and I have many from my early work that leave much to be desired. I have found over the years, however, that some of them are favorites. Thanks for all or your postings it surely livened up this shipping season!garbear wrote:I've got a few miscellaneous photos I'm going to post within the next couple days, but then that will be it. It's not that I ran out of photos, but some of them, in my mind, weren't worth posting. Some of them were from when I started taking photos and they left a lot to be desired. Thanks for all the great comments you made during my journey. They were greatly appreciated!GuestfromEU wrote:Hi Garbear. Just a quick note to say thank you for all of the photos you posted. I'm guessing you ran out of material, but it was great to see the progression throughout the years. I think this may be one of the most viewed threads in this page's history!

Re: Photo Collection
General Mills "A" in Duluth is inactive. Probably used for storage. Don't load boats there anymore. General Mills "S" in Superior basically only load grain for Buffalo, and that's pretty infrequent. I don't go out anymore because of my health, but I'd think the Port Terminal is a "no". The fishing pier at Rice's Pt. is a great place to take photos of boat coming/going from Harvest States, the coal dock, and the CN ore dock. I know there are active "boatnerds" and they probably would be able to help more, but you got my two cents worth. I was told to leave a couple times when I took photos at some of the elevators.
Re: Photo Collection
Most of those locations are still fairly accessible. The Old Interstate Bridge is a public pier now beneath the Blatnik Bridge. The slip down by the old Sivertson's fishery in Superior, where the A.E. Clifford is moored, is still accessible too. There is an elevated over-look by the CN Ore Docks as well. Getting around on the Port Terminal is a little more restricted now but you can still see the boats quite well. There is also Pier B Hotel and restaurant on the old LaFarge site in Duluth that offers some quite nice vantage points as well. On the other side of the bridge, is Connor's Point which offers some great views from the opposite end of the Interstate Bridge as well as Fraser Shipyard.
Re: Photo Collection
Looking at all of these great pictures of the Duluth / Superior area, begs the question as to how accessible are some of these locations today? I have been spending a week at Duluth the past few years and plan to do so again in May of 2018 and would like to take a look at getting some pictures of ships loading. I usually get them as they enter and leave but would like to expand my opportunities if possible.
Thanks Garbear for posting all of your pictures!

Re: Photo Collection
Evidently the rest of the forward house is not air conditioned, and the Captain wanted air in the Pilot House.
Re: Photo Collection
Here's a photo from duluthshippingnews.com. Definitely look like A/C units.

What are those wood-colored things sticking out of the front of the pilot house on the Canadian Voyaguer? Almost look like covered AC units, but an odd place for that.
Re: Photo Collection
A few more today.
Re: Photo Collection
Another grey day in Duluth. Already have received over 17 inches of snow this yr. Over 12 inched above normal.

I realized the mistake with the dates after I posted the photos. Happy you like the photo!GuestfromEU wrote:I cannot be certain without reviewing photos at home (I am at sea at this moment), but I believe the Algocen had docked at St Lawrence Cement prior to CHS in the last photo series. During the time at the cement dock, I shared dinner with Captain Hougesen and Chief Kilpatrick. Many time more in the coming years I would meet them in the Twin Ports, getting a free lunch and tour in exchange for being a chauffeur for the crew and going into town.
Garbear - This photo you posted absolutely made my day! I was showing the picture to my co-workers on my ship now (European decent), and they were asking many questions, as of course the lake boat design is not so common in the world. They were astounded when I said a 1960s ship was not considered very old at the time, late 1990s. Not the newest, but we all thought they would last for many years more.
