Really captures that earlier era. Wish the powers to be had the foresight to keep it as a more vital part of industry into today and going forward...

History of Great Lakes Shipping

While scanning through Project Gutenberg, I came across the following quite interesting book: The Great Lakes; The Vessels That Plough Them: Their Owners, Their Sailors, and Their Cargoes. The author is James Oliver Curwood, and the book dates from 1909. Aside from having some excellent photos of Lake Boats of the period. there is a chapter on the author's trip on a Great Lakes freighter, the Harry Berwyn.
